Nvidia has started its "Ultimate Countdown" - Something BIG is coming!

What's coming ? Something vastly overpriced that will be bought up by every idiot from the EU to the states.

This kinda comment is getting boring.

They're expensive, yes... But overpriced compared to what?

I plan the most powerful single chip GPU I can afford. Why does that make me an idiot?

To be fair to both of you, to each his own.

Nvidia as always (much the same as Intel used to) will have their prices set at a premium until something that poses a threat to their segment of the market comes along, whereby at which point they will adjust prices accordingly to compete - same old story different year.

Whilst I agree, there is nothing on the market (currently) that comes close to the performance of the 2000 series.

I just wondered why Dice would consider me an idiot for buying a new GPU.

haha yes! This is the first time I am really depending on Navi to make a difference. If Zen was able to shake up Intel, lets hope Navi can bring Nvidia and their overrated stock price down to earth!

Think its more to do with their flagships costing upwards of £1200 for one GPU, and people are still paying that amount (im an idiot with the 2080ti so I raise my hand there)

But you aren't an idiot for doing so.

You paid a lot for the brand new Flagship GPU which provided unparalleled performance to the table and included new tech such as Ray Tracing and DLSS.

Yes it was more expensive that previous gen flagship but it bought more to the table.

I just frustrates me when someone who cannot justify the price of something for themselves consider people who can idiots.

I've heard rumours that the 3090 will be a dual-GPU card... If that's the case I will aim to buy the highest tier single GPU available and I will have no regrets.

P.S. I have been guilty of this behaviour in the past, however, I like tothink I have grown a little...

I agree with you in this thread regarding his comment is getting both boring and old.

Nothing towards Dicey here though, but each to their own.

Now everyone may have their opinions and sure, Nvidias new GPUs will most likely be expensive and in ”common sense” terms, not value at all. But calling everyone an idiot for it was the wrong way to put it.

Another example is this, many people today are buying Teslas, just because it’s the future of cars. Are they expensive? Absolutely. But does that make people idiots for buying these expensive cars, if and when they can afford it? Even though they may be overpriced as well? No, it doesn’t.

At the end of the day, people will buy RTX 3080 Ti’s, Lambos, Teslas, private jets, super yachts, as they can afford it. But that doesn’t make them idiots - just makes them having different opinions and values than others in life.
As does everyone else in this world.

I think he referred to the flagship model. The rest in the mainstream segment are actually decently priced since they are competing strongle against AMD.

High end has no competition so Nvidia charge what they want. £1200 for a GPU is stupid and no, it was not worth it, yet I am an idiot because I helped prove to nvidia that they can overprice their products, and know people will still pay for it.

What im trying to say is that when everyone agrees their price to performance is so bad, had we had the will power to say "no" nvidia may have become more realistic with their pricing. Same product at the end of the day, but a little more in reach to the rest of the world

i think £1000 plus for any single computer part is ludicrous unless its being used for business purposes. We have all been convinced that "we need the best" when in fact only a very small percentage of pc gamers actually need a top end GPU.
Its the same as any sales, trick you into believing that you need more than you actually do, I need a car to get to work, oh but sir you also need all these extra features that you'll never use and the ability to go 200mph even though there are no roads you can go that quickly.
the frustration comes when people are being priced out of their passion, as I have. I used to build a new pc almost yearly because I enjoyed it, as the prices went up the amount of new builds I got to do diminished and now I am still stuck on an ivy bridge build and cannot afford to upgrade in a way that seems financially viable and I have been priced out of something I used to love.
To get a better processor and motherboard and ram, is about the same cost as an entire build was. a GPU, more than the cost of an entire build, PSU, SSD, cooler and case, again an entire builds cost.
When a brand constantly and consistently keeps raising its prices and people keep paying them the costs only increase, and looking at what Nvidia has been paying its shareholders and the amount of shares it has created over the last decade, it is not a case of costs going up in line with prices, it was greed. I can't do what I love because some other greedy guy wanted more money, nice.
The same goes for processors, and pretty much any other part. Intel have been giving us what is essentially the same stock now for 5 years, overclocking them and giving them stupid names and stupid prices. sent a load out to reviewers to praise them and make everyone want one so they can keep driving the prices up. Nothing has changed, the way the wafers have been being cut is the same as it always has been the process node is the same and the costs to produce 14nm have only been going down since its inception, intel have just been cutting what it would class as "professional" chips (ie Xeon) and sending them out as gaming chips. The 9th gen is a perfect example, lets add a i9 sku to the consumer line up and disable hyperthreading on the i7, why? why not people will buy them and make them want to spend extra on the HT model which has been artificially held back to make more money
I don't think anyone who needs to buy a £1200 gpu and does is stupid, the people that simply want the penis extensions and are happy to pay to brag but are running minecraft on a 1080p monitor are the fools.

You do need a top end GPU for certain uses though.

For example, I play at 1440p and tend to whack everything on Ultra.

Even an easy to run game like Destiny 2 cannot be played at a constant 165FPS which is my monitors max.

It all depends on what you're aiming for IMO.

When Ampere launches I will wait for the Titan card.

I won't be buying any 3080 Ti cards this time I will just wait for the Titan.

I also don't care what anyone thinks of my purchasing decisions as it is my hobby so if anyone wishes to call me an idiot or worse please do so.:)

You have to be a bit of a tool to fall for the hype about a piece of hardware. Especially a piece of overpriced hardware used to play video games. I can sort of understand hype surrounding new generation of consoles, but hyping up one piece that goes into the PC and that will likely cost an arm and a leg is moronic.

And remember kids, it's the hype that allows them to price these things as much as they do. If people didn't fall for the hype, the demand would be lower, and thus the price will have to decrease. You're doing yourself a disservice by being excited for this crap like it's something that you absolutely must have. You have to be smarter with your money and with your life.

Yeah, not like it's the most important part when it comes to gaming luckily

There may not be one.

If AMD can't bring out anything close I reckon they will leave it there. I've also heard rumblings about a 3090Ti, but again I would surmise that is only there in case AMD get close.

Idiot was a bit harsh I admit but people keep spending these silly amounts of money on GPU's and the GPU manufacturers raise their prices not because they have to but because they can, If sales slumped in a major way prices would have to come down back to 1000 series levels not nearly £1200 and they'd still make a profit.

I think so long as your buying a card in relation to your resolution or fps need/want then it's valid it's when you buy something massively powered to do a simple task that i'd think differently thou people do drive mini's with farrari engines in them and bling all over it so i guees it don't really matter tbh.

I'll either get a 3070 or an amd navi equivelent but i will for sure be waiting until they are out in the wild before I commit to either of them.

lower prices would be nice or at least in line the same is better than the price going up at least, but the mid range is where a lot of us go thou sure given the chance we'd all build something crazy with funds at hand.

I'm sure there is someone that plays overwatch and has a 64/128 CPU and dual 2080ti's there will always be people like that but part of that is the fun of building something you can feel good about.

I agree thou longer time between builds and with older hardware for a lot of us as we simply can't afford to upgrade as often and not able to enjoy the hobby as much as the past, but saying that way way back in the day my first PC cost me £2500 and now my smart phone is easily a lot faster and more capable than it ever was, i use it as a TV stand now lol
