Nvidia GTX 970 owners in the US can now claim their $30 settlement, which comes as a result of the 2015 class-action lawsuit over the falsely advertised memory capacity of the GPU.

It just seems to me that there are more important issues in the US....like a lack of clean drinking water or access to proper healthcare...than pursuing a case of miss-advertising. Strange sense of priorities.

Can someone remind me, (without descending into the whole witch hunt against Nvidia) what was Nvidias reason for doing the whole 3.5gb + 0.5gb. How was this supposed to be so beneficial. Or was the 0.5gb being taken from somewhere else?

It had to do with how many ROPs were on the 970 vs the 980 if I remember correctly. In order to maintain the 4 GB of RAM, they had to remap the 0.5 GB of RAM that would have been mapped to the disabled ROPs or something along those lines.
