According to an Nvidia dev/engineer on twitter who has now deleted his tweet as he was likely not permitted to talk about it, The goal is to have it working on lower end cards such as the 5070 which I'd wager would massively lower the amount of backlash.

Is that an RTX 5070 by itself, or an RTX 5070 as an "AI SLI" card? (I'm joking)

I don't think the potential performance cost is causing the backlash. It's just AI hate in general. It was unveiled at an AI event and not a gaming one, which didn't help.

At a time when AI is causing so much harm to the enthusiast PC market, people are jumping on the hate bandwagon whenever they can. When AI is causing the price of tech to go up, a lot of people can only see AI as a bad thing. People will take any and all opportunities to call something "slop".

All good points, I think they should've had DLSS5 as its own standalone event showcased and talked about over an hour or maybe even 2 in a well produced video with people like Bryan Catanzaro, Edward Liu and game devs explaining everything properly in detail, The usual types would've still started crying, Screaming and stomping their feet but at least there would be full detailed information so people wouldn't have to go digging for information afterwards.
