Nvidia cancels its RTX 4080 12GB - 16GB Model Still on Track

I think most people believe the "4080 12Gb" should have been the "4070" and it will be interesting to see if that is what it becomes.

I still need to actually look properly at the reviews, because I am sick of seeing "X performance increase when using DLSS", I don't care about DLSS just give me raw performance numbers of real rendering at the said resolution.

Although I suspect that may not be as big a performance increase as quite a few like to throw in the headlines.

The 12GB version should have been revealed as the 4070 as it's clearly not in the same performance bracket as the proper 4080 16GB.

So they've copped too much backlash and decided to drop it, good!

No I don't think it was the backlash. They knew what the reaction would be. I reckon they realised it wasn't legal. Trading Standards for example would have been all over it.

Last thing they need is a 3.5gb debacle.

I'm not so sure mate, Nvidia have this attitude that they can do whatever the hell they like and everyone's going to be fine with it, and when all the YouTubers and all the comments from the audience are pushing back, then they've though oh we better not do this, so they'll still release it and just call it a 4070Ti.

Yeah, I think it's the backlash and the confusion people have expressed that has caused this. Maybe there were legal claims thrown at Nvidia, and the word 'lawsuits' might have been tossed around. But I think it's more to do with how many individuals there would be that would buy a 4080 12GB and genuinely believe they're buying a 4080 16GB with 4GB less VRAM. That could end in a lot of unhappy customers and returned GPUs. Plus, Nvidia is leaving AMD a HUGE opening to undercut them. Like, $300 worth. If a 7750XT performs on par with a 4080 12GB and cost $650, Nvidia would be screwed.

I just don't believe that they caved because of buyers. Especially because their press release goes on to rave on about how good their 3080 is. I reckon someone felt their collar. A lawyer perhaps, or a commission. Believe me, for what this has cost them (a lot, they have had to pay for every box printed and back plate etc) there was a much bigger reason than "Because gamers were peed".

And yeah Exc, it will definitely be rebranded, but it will cost money.

A lot in the average users eyes, but for Nvidia, it most likely wouldn’t barely be a dent in their wallet.

It'll be costly.

TBH I wish that instead of all of the influencers kicking off about a 4070 with 4080 written on it they would concentrate more on these absolutely INSANE prices. Instead of just slightly muttering something under their breath whilst saying the card is really fast ETC just stand firm and slag off every single GPU.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what they call the 4070 it will still cost way more than it should.

I'm sick of how weak people are now. None of this used to happen when paper magazines were around. If something cost too much it was labelled awful, and stupid. I still remember the review of the Killer NIC. "A good network card? or a test of stupidity?" 20%. Because back in those days the mag was funded by the people who read it, not the providers of the products like now.

I'm also getting sick of dragged out boring cynical ad fest videos just to give you a tiny snippet of "news". Gamer's Nexus managed 10 minutes over this, and Hardware Unboxed managed 12 minutes. FFS it takes about ten seconds to say "Nvidia have decided to change the name of the 4080 12gb because it was stupid and a complete con".

The prices suck.

to me call it anything but make sure it's performance matches it's price, the gaps they leave in the stack mean they intend to fill them with something like always be it a super ti or 285 295 etc.

AMD have the perfect opertunity to take a share but even i'm not foolish enough to expect it, but i do feel they have something good on the way so i'd say to anyone thinking just wait and if it's not what you hope you have a ton of 2nd hand GPU's to pick from.

Guys like GN and HWU have regularly lambasted companies that have acted with only themselves in mind. NZXT, ASUS, Nvidia, AMD, Intel, all of them. Even GN did not take sides with EVGA; they simply reported the news to consumers.

Yeah kind of hypocritical that GN boasts how they pay for their own hardware, yet "Before that"... And then videos loaded with ads.

TBH I would not take sides with EVGA. They have had plenty of issues over the years trying to cut costs. Explodey VRM on the 1080ti FTW cards, explodey 3090s for cheaping out on the power controllers and etc.

I think they were sensible to get out tbh. It's all about Nvidia now, and I wouldn't bother making stuff for a tiny profit if it means doing it wrong.

TBH yes they're stupidly priced but in this day and age show me what isn't GREED rules, the only good thing to come of all this, is that some poor shmuck who doesn't know the difference, isn't now going to buy an inferior product thinking they're buying a cheaper model

TBH that scam could only work on a noob. Things like the 1060, 1030 etc. You would never pull the wool over someone's eyes over a grand.

TBH Nvidia did not even want to release yet. That is quite probably why the prices are so extra insane, and why the product stack was a mess. Because they have absolutely NO IDEA what is going on at AMD and had no choice but to launch now for the shareholders.

You can highly expect all of these cards they are launching to be superseded any way. Or re jiggled in the stack once AMD have had their turn.

What I am praying for is a bit of a miracle, and the Maxwell rumour to be true. Because if that is indeed the case and they have decided to pretty much bin off RTX in favour of performance and cost? Nvidia will have to slash their prices. Or lose market share.

Thing is I am not getting too excited because AMD have been pretty bloody greedy themselves.

I've heard very few rumours about AMD. Just mutters about Maxwell but no one has any idea how they will perform yet.

I expect from a legal stand point, they'd be fine. We've seen it before where a company can call a product whatever they want as long as it has specs to show exactly what it is. This is the same with cars, put an E or I or D on the end of the model number, legally a completely different product.

They also have Tim Teter on their board who has a law degree from a very reputable university and i expect he would have gazed over this prior to the press release.

I am certain it was the media backlash combined with the consumers
