Nvidia 700 series price drop

Wow 780 now $50 cheaper than an R290X, that's such a kick in the balls to AMD as they've always had the selling point of being cheaper

Yer especially given what Tom's vid on what to buy becomes a no brainer one would think.

Nvidia definitely have the upper hand now. AMD made a mistake in not allowing third-party companies to design non-ref coolers from the get go. I really wanted to see what the likes of MSI, Gigabyte, EVGA, etc. could have done with the 290X right now.

Yer 290x lighting or something might have been good but not sure they will bother as much now. Unless amd price drop to complete.

TTL raised an excellent point/theory about them not allowing non reference coolers: Some companies make gash coolers that just aren't up to the job of cooling that HOT card, and AMD didn't want to have to deal with a ton of RMA requests because cards have fried.

I do agree though, they shouldn't have made such an inefficient chip in the first place that produces that much heat

Yeah, it would have looked really bad on AMD's part.

Well they have 2 options:
- Price drop to compete
- Or dont and the venders wont give much support

Well thats my thoughts

It IS the better performing card and people are still buying it despite the heat issues. Also imagine if XFX were allowed to have their grubby hands on it :l. I think AMD will lower prices even more and before you know it we'll have got a great deal :D.

The 780 Ti is going to have to out-perform the Titan if they're to price it at that point. Makes one wonder what becomes of the Titan now. One would certainly have to feel bad for those that dropped a cool 1k on it.

On the other hand though, the 780 is going to get a good bit more attractive. I'm going to have fight temptation not to pick one up over the Xmas. It's shaping up to be a good time to buy a GPU. :)

Actually, if anything the AMD GPU is more efficient than the corresponding nVidia GPU aboard the 780 & Titan, as they're both on the same process, and its die is like 20% or so smaller, but yet has similar performance.

Sadly though,
High Performance = High Heat Dissipation

You're not going to get a 2W Smartphone-targeted CPU breaking world records, there's a reason the likes of the 8-Core Xeons are rated at 150W. Same goes with GPUs too, if the 780 Ti is going out-perform the 290X, it's going to produce similar levels of heat.

A worse cooler than a reference AMD Vacuum? Doubtful, Maybe a PCB that is not up to par or the vendor / vendors ended up with worse silicon than the rest.

They are just waiting for the Nvidia counter attack, It will be a higher performing card therefore release a cooler capable of higher clock speeds and its even Stevens again.

Just found a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 780 for $510 on newegg, should I wait to see what the MSI price drops look like?

Edit: MSI Gaming 780 is now $520.

Honestly I don't think AMD have done yet.. this can't just be it.

I mean come on these are the Volcanic Islands (Irony) GPUs, Tahiti, Hawaii... there's still Santorini, Java, Krakatoa, Loihi, Mauna & Kilauea to name but a few if there smart they'll have something cooler up their sleeves.

I'm not sure whether to buy the 780 now or wait to see if the price drops abit more nearer xmas

I just pulled the trigger on a MSI 780.... hope I didn't make a mistake by not waiting for 290x non reference cards and the 780ti.

How does that help him? lol

If you can wait though then i would. You only win more in the end and plus add in xmas sales saving money and still getting the performance.
