No power to mobo

Hi everyone, perhaps you all can help me with something? I recently finished building my custom PC, with the exception of the CPU which has yet to arrive, and I decided to put it all together and test it. All the power connectors are in, everything is connected but my motherboard has no lights on it and when I press the power button, nothing happens. I have plugged the power button into the front panel connector, and the PSU is working as when it gets power, I hear a faint noise. I also did the paperclip test as suggested by the Corsair website. I am using an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard and a Corsair CX750M PSU. Anyone know what the problem might be?

you explained it yourself without the cpu the motherboard wont power on.. at least in my experience but ive only built 775/am2 pc's not sure if its 100% true for the new chipsets...

Really? I was told that if you tried to turn it on without the CPU, it would just beep at you. Even so, I would have thought that the mobo would at least be getting power, if not turning on.

Well, my CPU isn't going to arrive for a while, so I might just borrow my mate's i3 3220 to test it. Thanks for the help guys!

Why would you want to hear it beep? :p You can't really test much without a CPU, even if the motherboard did turn on...
