New toys

I've decided to jump on the SSD band wagon, and get a couple of Samsung 128GB drives for Xmas, but unfortunately I feel the RAID controller on the Classified is a bit anaemic.

So I've invested in an adaptec 5805 dual core SAS/SATA card. Yes its expensive and involves swapping to a new install of windows but this should result in some massive speed gains.

My current plans are:

RAID 0 on SSDs

RAID 0 on 1TB F3

RAID 5 on 1TB F1 Backup

When funds permit another Velociraptor RAID 0 on those

I'll put some figures up when I've got some installing done:

RAID 0 on a pair of F1s I'm getting 205MB/s write (sequential) so I'm looking orward to having a pair of SSDs in that config...440MB/s:yumyum:

OK some numbers, sequential 1000MB I'm getting 460MB/s read, 450MB/s Write, this is not writing to the cache of the card as that gives gigabit transfer times.

Random 512Kb I'm getting in the low 300s.

Samsung PB22-J 128GB drives in RAID 0. Only problem is that the raid controller adds nearly a minute to boot time. But on the other hand, everything is lightning quick, so swings and roundabouts.

A dedicated controller always will add to boot as it initialises, but alsong as you pc isnt part of the nuclear defence system where every second counts stop moaning and realise once its started its running quicker than a cheetah on speed!

Damn there goes all my plans of world domination. Also...how *@!King quick are SSDs and RAID cards...Half Life 2 literally displays the word loading for a half a second, then we're off again.

mental fast! thats generally the idea mind! Ive just got a new toy but you will have to wait untill the new year to see it!

that and Ive got 12 hard drives to find :p

Yeah boot time, from the end of posting to firefox opening (no windows logon screen) was 24.5s, to the desktop was 23.8s, most of that time seemed to be waiting for the windows 7 is starting logo to be drawn.
