New Socket 2011 Build Advice

Hey all, im planning on a new build in the coming couple of months, before committing i thought it best to ask for some opinions / advice as i havent built a system since dual core amd athlons were cutting edge lol.

Ive deliberated long and hard over all of my components but am happy to look at alternatives.

My system will be used for Gaming, Video Rendering and Photoshop mainly.

Im looking to get as high end a system as i can for my budget, which is about £2000 but anything that isnt vital for getting the system up and running I can always look at getting later on.

I already have a gaming mouse and speaker setup that i used with my gaming notebook but everything else will need to be purchased.

Thankyou very much for any advice youd like to give, had this all in my head for a while and would be nice to have an fresh outside perspective on it all.

CPU wise.. wait for next gen 2011... GPU wise.. wait till Sept 25th as AMD will be announcing new GPUs... Then make a choice.

Get a single large SSD.. Samsung have new ssds called Samsung Evo which come in 750gb and 1tb sizes or a Crucial M500 1tb(slower but may be cheaper). A 512gb/480/360gb ssds are still good options too.

Go for a better case.. the 300r just seems super cheap for all this hardware.. Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 will be perferct with an H80i/H100i...
Go for a Corsair AX760 or a Seasonic X760.

Nice choices on the ram too!

Other than that not much else i would change(except the HDD but you need the storage and reliability)

Well the reviews for IB-E dont look to be anything all that great. As expected theyre just a small bump up from SB-E in IPC but with worse overclocking. Could make an argument for just going with a SB-E build instead if youre an avid overclocker and need something sooner rather than later. If youre wanting to get this done now, I say grab a 3930K and get to it. Something like this maybe for £1948.

Thats using the 3930K and H100i on a Sabertooth because I just love the Sabertooth line of motherboards and just couldnt help myself. I went with a Plextor M5 Pro SSD because I just like them a little better. They get very good reviews and seem to be very durable and long lasting from what Ive read around the forums and various review sites. I went with a GTX780 cause its just the boss right now. Yeah, AMD has some cards coming out soon but I dont think theyre going to be anything to set the world on fire and not really anything to wait a month for. A GTX780 is still a beast of a card thatll shred thru pretty much anything at 2560x1600. Of course I went with a Seasonic Platinum power supply because theyre pretty much the best on the market right now.

I would keep an open mind about IB-E as it should not have the overclocking problems that normal IB and Haswell does due to the IHS on IB-E being soldered.

Better memory controller as well.. Supports 1866mhz ram out of the box with a full 64gb loaded up in all 8 slots. It's newer tech so really no reason to get it anyways..

HardOCP has a review out for IB-E and they're pretty close to SB-E. The way HardOCP does their CPU reviews, they overclock them all to 4.5 GHz and then compare them all at the same clock speed. Compared clock for clock, they're about neck and neck.

Overclocking, they couldn't get passed 4.6. They got 4.7 to work but would crash after 40 minutes. SB-E seems to overclock a good bit better with lots of 4.9 GHz overclocks out there it seems.

So if you're going to overclock the balls off your chip, you could almost say that you'd be better off with SB-E instead since it has a couple extra MHz headroom and might perform a little better at the end of the day all while being a little cheaper.

I'd sooner get larger and fewer SSDs than getting 2 smallish ones. If you really want two though, I'd get two of the same size so if you ever wanted you can whack them in a RAID array. For a £2000 build, I'd probably spend a little bit more on the PSU, the one listed is quite good but it's only bronze rated, try get a gold rated one like a Corsair AX850/860i

That HardOCP review is a bit lacking in a lot of areas but if they are right about the overclocking this is a bit shocking to say the least.

I would have preferred them to have used a RIVE mobo to do the review as this is a known quantity and still probably the best X79 board for overclocking.

I also can not understand why HardOCP did not run with some decent memory and really push the IMC. I was expecting big things of IB-E in this area, I have run my Corsair Dominator Platinums at 2600mhz 10-12-12 without any extra voltage on SB-E so it would have been interesting to see how far IB-E can go.

Also in the HardOCP review some of the voltages they had to use when overclocking was terrible like setting VCCSA to 1.4v, I never have to use more than 1.1v on SB-E with much higher overclocks and memory speeds.

If HardOCP are right this is not good news for IB-E

All will be explained by us after NDA Tuesday but dont expect anything earth shattering.

Yeah its not a comprehensive review. It's just meant as an IPC comparison with some overclocking in it. Full reviews like Tom's upcoming one will be more comprehensive and cover more.

Thankyou very much all for your responses and advice, Ive decided to change which case im going for... still corsair though lol, and ill be going for a single larger ssd, but unfortunately i was kinda dissapointed with ivy-e... i know i was told by many not to get my hopes up but i still did lol.
So yeah its all made me go back to the drawing board a little with the build, so much so that im now considering a 4770k ROG haswell build....
Lots of thinking to be done now dammit, i hate second guessing myself but i do it so so often.
