New Silverstone fans offering budget and high-end options.

The world of after market fans appears to be dominated by one name: Noctua. They provide some of the best fans money can buy. Recently they released a new line of fans, aimed at people with a lower budget. These Noctua Redux fans still offered the same quality whilst reducing the amount of accessories supplied; such as anti-vibration pads, rubber grommets, etc.

Silverstone also make damn good quality fans. Their Air Penetrator fans have proved quite popular amongst the enthusiasts who like to increase the airflow in their rig.

Now, Silverstone have released TWO new series of fans - the FQ and FW series. FQ are described by Silverstone as being "Premium Fans Designed for Ultimate Quiet Operation". The cheaper option of the two is the FW series, which are modestly described as "Professional PWM fans with optimal performance and low noise".

Both fan series are available in various sizes, ranging from the usual 120mm down to 80mm. A bonus for the FW series, though, is that they offer a 'thin' version of their 120mm fan, which measures 15mm in thickness, as opposed to the usual 25mm.

The FW series have a blue frame with white fan blades, which may not be to everyone's taste but is definitely different to what we usually see. Don't forget that Noctuas are still great fans, despite being brown and beige. The FW series also supports PWM and use 'long life' sleeve bearings. Silverstone claim these will last for 40,000 hours of use before failing.

I'm quite fond of the colour scheme.

The FQ fans do not have a 15mm thin version. However, they do have a 140mm version, for those who do like adding larger fans. On the FQ series, Silverstone has decided to use their own P.C.F bearing, giving them around 150,000 hours between failures. They all support PWM, have anti-vibration rubber mounts and are supplied with speed reduction adapters.

Again, I like these colours!

Silverstone build good quality products, whether it's their cases or power supplies. If you don't worry about matching the fan colours in your case, these may suit you well. Prices start at around $9 USD for the smallest FW fan and $10 USD for the smallest FQ variant. These are also available in the UK, at Scan.

Anyone interested, or a the colours off putting? People seem to be able to ignore colour when it comes to Noctua so why wouldn't the same work for Silvertone? ;)
