Optical drives - probably no change for years to come.

Hard drives - arguably they`ll step up a bit.

no. as SSD's are at the moment, they are inferior. Give 'em a couple of years, and you should see SSD's climb up the ladder.

On a slightly random note, SATA-IO would prefer people not to refer to it as SATA 3 as they fear it would cause confusion and apparently don't approve of the popular SATAII naming scheme either.

SATA 6GB/s it is then, although i prefer sata 3. Not sure how calling it sata3 would confuse people?!?
