New rig advice wanted

Hey guys I am looking for advice for an upcoming build.

This will only be my second build so far. My first one is about 5 years old now give or take. I am coming here for advice before I buy anything because my first build has left me a little disappointed in a few minor ways so I do not want to repeat the same mistakes, so here I am.

Basically in the next few weeks I am hoping to build a new machine. The specs are below of what I have my eye on.

Case: Coolermaster Cosmos 2

Mobo: Asus Sabertooth x79

Cpu: i7 3820

Cooling: Corsair H100

Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16bg 1600mhz

Gpu: Nvidia gtx680

Hdd: 2tb western digital cavier

Boot drive: Corsair Force gt ssd

Power: I will be reusing my corsair 700w power supply thats less than 12 months old.

I will also be buying a new monitor, Benq XL2410T 120hz is a must.

What I am wondering is, is this a good system primarily for gaming but I will need it to do 3d cad work for college but nothing major.

Is there anything that I should change?

Is there anything there that will have a newer or better model coming in the next few weeks eg ivy bridge?

Is there anything I may want to spend a little more on? eg I was looking at the asus rampage 4 or would it not be worth the extra money as I plan on only running 1 graphics card, possibly 2 down the line.

Is there anything I shouldn't "waist" my money on eg the gtx680. Would I be better off buying a 580 or two 570's etc for the same money?

Any advice would be appreciated.

your specs seem fine, i assume your looking to try 3d vision given you want a 120hz monitor. as for your gpu i would go for the 680, the 580 may be £80 cheaper but the reduced power draw and noise of a 680 make it the better buy, and if you want to sli the 680 a 700w psu should be enough for 2.

Personally I don't see a point in socket 2011 for gaming builds as the 2500K is a great CPU and will last a long time. If you went with the 2500K you would save a lot of money on the CPU and motherboard which could be used else where in your build. For example an SSD

+1... if it is for gaming, a 2500k is a fantastic processor. I do indeed have one myself

3d isn't a must but would be nice to have. I was thinking of the 680 because of a few benchmarking videos I have seen. It is good to know my psu shouldn't have any issues if I go sli in the future.

First off I honestly didn't see that section so thanks. If a mod or admin wishes to move this thread feel free to do so thanks.

1: My budget is 2-2100 euro approx.

2: Primarily gaming but some 3d modelling but nothing too intense. Games, Counter strike, team fortress, portal 1+2, gotham city imposters, crysis 1+2, BF3, F1 2011 and a few more. That is just a shortlist of what I either play alot of or want to play.

3: No I Have a copy of windows 7

4: Yes power supply and dvd drive. I can use my old hdd but I need more space and I want a ssd for booting so that one isn't really helpful. Edit: I have a Thermatake armour jr case but some of my issues are cable management cooling which hinder performance.

5: I don't need a monitor but I want to upgrade to the benq XL2410T reason is it's a 120hz monitor and I play cs:s competitively and 120hz is an advantage.

5a: see above

5b: current one is a 19inch dell 1280x1024

6: No

7: Yes

8: Not for a few weeks possibly sometime in May. I am no major rush at the moment but I dont want to be waiting months either.

Well with that kind of a crazy big budget you could get the i7-3930K no problem.

Couple of things I would note are,

SSD I would get is the Samsung 830 or the Kingston HyperX

RAM, I would go for something a little less intrusive than the Vengeance, maybe Vengeance Low Profile or another brand with lower heatspreaders.

Doesn't matter how tall your RAM is when he's using a H100. Also, the Corsair Force GT is a great SSD, no need to change that either. But yeah, if you can stretch to a 3930K go for it, but if you can't it's not an issue at all.

I know the RAM won't be an issue with the H100 but who knows what the future holds and someday he might need to install an air cooler.

Unless you really like the look of the Vengeance I would get something a little lower.

if you can afford try to get a 3930k processor, it will have 2 more cores than the 3820 and is pretty much the best processor available. as for ram, any size will do if you are using the H100.

Remember to put some money aside for good fans, bitfenix spectres are a good choice or noctua
