New PSU?

I asked my brother if he would be interested in buying a Corsair AX 850W and switching it with my current Enermax Revolution 85+ 1250W and he seemed very interested.

So should I do it? I don't need 1250W and neither does my brother so it's really just for bragging rights. Besides that I kind of want to try something new.

So what do you guys think? Should I do this deal with my brother? And it's not like I'll loose my Enermax Revolution 85+.

I could have it back if I needed it and he didn't so it's not an downgrade if you understand what I mean.

Oh, and is there any other PSU I should "trade" with him then the Corsair AX 850W?

It doesn't matter how enormous a PSU is. If it is efficient then you will use as much electricity as you are pulling. Hence the certs. 80+ means the PSU is 80% efficient at loads. Higher the better. So, your 85+ revolution could actually end up costing less to run with the same draw on it as another PSU.

I wouldn't faff around. IIRC your PSU is one of the best any way, so buggering around for the sake of buggering around is just, well, buggering around.

Actually Alien you need to have a PSU running as near to its limits as possibleto be running efficiently. The 850w would be much more effecient than the 1250.

TBH even a HX750w would be a better idea.

Fair enough. It does seem a bit overkill tbh.

Did a bit of poking around last night regarding power supplies, draw and efficiency and dug up the following.

It's also important to note that PSUs tend to be the most efficient if you run them at 50-75% capacity rather than anywhere near full load. This is why lots of companies are now aiming for 80-85+ in order to make them more efficient but still they remain the most efficient at 50-75% load. They are also quieter and will last a whole lot longer.

So I would work out what your current system is drawling using something like outervision from Thermaltake

And then work out which PSU would be more efficient to you. TBH it sounds like both will be about identical but if you add hardware to the 850w psu you could end up becoming far less efficient.

Right. Outervision says that your system is pulling 450w. Thus that would mean around 55% of the Corsair making that the better choice.
