I had a problem a couple of weeks ago where my pc packed in. it would not boot up, I tried all the cables and all the other advice that was given to me and nothing worked. the led on the case and the fans came on every other time I tried but just for a brief second. I brought the pc into work this morning for the engineers to give it a quick test to see what the problem is. I think it could be the power supply or the motherboard and im just waiting to hear back what the problem is and then I will buy what ever is needed.

my spec is...

spec.
Corsair Obsidian 650D
i5 3570k ivy
coolermaster 700w power unit
gigabyte 7950
kuhler cooler
8gb corsair vengeance lp
gigabyte z77x 3dh

can someone please suggest a new motherboard or powersupply to suit the above spec. please help :(

sounds like the psu is dead start with the psu id get a psu tester they are cheap about 15-25 pounds good tool to keep hold of you never know wen you need it

psu wise you don't need a big one 550-600 watt max my rig is almost the same as yours same cpu gpu same size ram I pull less then 300 watts from the wall wen gaming that's the most stressful thing I do with my rig and I have a cheap corsair cx600m psu

Its most likely a PSU problem. Replacing should do the trick and if on a budget its ok to go with a lower end psu that has a good warranty.

for £50 or so quid you can get the Seasonic 520w for £52 on Amazon, it is a very nice psu for the money. I think the XFX unit (oem of seasonic) is around £45 for the 550w version aswell, but the CS can be very bad!

I want to pick your brains some more :)

at present I have one gigabyte 7950, in the future its obvious that I will need to up grade with crossfire or with a newer gpu.

I cant seem to find the gigabyte 7950 anywhere except ebay, would it be worth buying one setting up crossfire? its cheaper. what wattage of psu would I need then?

cheers that was a very useful page. it works out 541w's.

I want to get something that is fully modular and with a gold rating. can you recommend one and a competitive site to buy from?

its in work mate with the engineers, that's a handy thread but knowing my luck I would blow the house up lol. I bought a tester on ebay anyway just to keep for any future problems.

im itching to buy the new PSU now :S im just waiting on work back to confirm if that is the case which I think it is.

I see you don't have the PSU on hand anymore, but if you want to know whether it's dead or not try this:

It's the cheapest and easiest way to test whether it's dead or not.

If you can't see the individual wires, then consult this. Connect the PS_ON (pin 16) to any ground connection. If its working, the fan should spin up.

I used to test old psu,s like that but the only thing is you don't know if a 5 volt rail or 12 volt rail is blown a psu can still be jump started even if one of the rails is blown I have a old sfx psu that I know the 5 volt rail is gone I use it for powering up pumps wen I make a change to my water cooling loop
