New monitor for gaming, 120hz worth it?

Hi all
I'm looking to get a monitor to go with a new gaming PC build. Back in the day I was used to very solid FPS from CRT's (solid 100min). would moving to the LCD/LED feel strange with 60hz? I'm assuming the low refresh rate will feel like low FPS did with the old CRT's?

Is there any good 120hz screens that aren't mega money?

Thanks for you help

120hz monitors usually are bad at color reproduction, which is even worse if you are looking for a cheap one.
60hz is fine, most of the people cannot tell the difference.
I would go with a good va panel monitor, or something of the sort

I'd prefer a IPS monitor over a 120Hz one though.
But that's because I work in IT and in publishing as well, so I tend to pay more attention to colour reproduction with monitors.

If you're coming from the CRT crowd, the first thing you may notice is that a TFT doesn't actually have a 'flicker' to it in the same way a CRT does, LCD/TFT panels don't seem to have that same flickering that you get, you shouldn't notice it too much at all.

It's only really apparent on a CRT because of the way it works. You may get some frame tearing above 60FPS on a 60Hz TFT monitor. But again, Vsync gets rid of that.

You won't notice anything like the kind of flickering you get from a CRT at all.

I dunno why but I'm extremely sensitive to light flicker, more so than most people seem to notice, I've been told it's due to my dyslexia *shrug* but when I made the move from a CRT to a TFT I was immediately more comfortable using the screen. :)

It depends on what games you will be playing. Fps you will notice a difference between 60 and 120 hz but that is only if you are getting high frame rates. You will notice the game seems to run smoother and it is a little bit easier to control recoil and keep your crosshair on targets that are moving.

If your playing other games I wouldn't bother tbh. The benq xl2410t is a good monitor and shouldn't cost a fortune but finding one now may be difficult since iirc they replaced it with the 2411t.

I have a 120hz monitor and I adore it I will never game on anything lower. You may not notice a big jump when going up but after you get used to 120 you will notice a difference going down.

It is the same thing in cars you may think wow this cars fast but you do not realise how fast until you drive something slow again.

Id run down to your local Best Buy or whatever and stare at some 120 Hz screens before investing. Some people dont like 120 Hz viewing. I sure as hell dont. It just looks weird and a little "wrong" so Ill stick to 60 Hz. But its all up to the eye of the beholder as some people swear by the smoothness. Best to make sure which group youre in before you drop a couple hundred on a 120 Hz monitor.

Nah tell him get the xl2410t and if he dosen't like it he can give it to me :D

If you have the option try it before you buy it.

Thanks for the ideas, true 100fps does look weird if your used to 60 :) I used the play CS professionally so I'll probably be looking at manly fast pased gamings so I think 120hz will be a must.

I did have an alianware laptop with 60hz and while CS was totally playable it just seemed the edge wasn't there.

Whats everyones view on the BenQ XL2411T? Anyone used one?

I've been rocking a Benq 2420T for a few months now and I must admit that when I first sat down and played a round of Battlefield 3 on it I was shocked to say the least. Every movement on the screen seemed very smooth and if you asked me I'd never go for anything less than a 120Hz-monitor after owning one of these.

If you ask me, go for the 120Hz-monitor =)

with the benq From what i can see its just the S-Switch, extra i/o ports and touch sensitive controls that adds the cost and the fact that the 20t does look better but that's a matter of opinion. Benq doesn't make it clear but im sure i saw somewhere that the 11t runs 144hz

The BenQ stuff does look really good. Now, is the XL2420T worth an extra £30? over the XL2411T?

Well I've only got experience with the 2420T so that I cannot say.

I'd like to believe that the only difference between the 2411T and the 2420T is the external looks and the contol unit that comes with the 2420T which is pretty much useless once you have configured the screen like you want it (adjusting contrast and colours).

I have heard people say that the 2411 is a 144hz monitor but I cant find it saying 144hz on benq's own site. It only says 120hz. That said the difference between 120hz and 144hz is not going to be really noticeable. It would be like the difference between 60 and 72hz.

As for the difference between the 2410 and 2420 the 20 is supposed to be better for 3d games but if you are not using it then go for the 10. I have the 10 and it is a very good monitor and 120 hz in games like cs and bf3 is very nice and I swear by it for fps games.

The only issue you may have is finding a 10t for sale as they seem to be gone but you may be able to pick one up second hand. Hell if the 11 isnt too much and is 144hz I may even swap my 10 for an 11 and sell my 10.

I've seen the new Asus monitors that are 144hz and the Asus IPS panels that you can switch between 3d and 2d by a press of a button.

IPS

144hz

That Benq XL2411T also seems really good, I haven't seen that price but I know it is at 1ms response time.
