New Laptop Spec

I have filled up the piggy bank and it is time to buy a new laptop.

I do video editing on this for clients as well as doing light gaming, movie etc when i'm away. Basically i want a desktop replacement in a medium size package.

I have used some of the larger 18" laptops but i find them too cumbersome to transport easily. The 15-16 is a good medium.

I have spec'd up this on the Sony site and I am very tempted to part with the cash.

I do care about the look of the laptop too.

My concerns are things getting too hot and causing issues. I will be getting a laptop stand to give her the ventilation required. In reality are the higher ends specs actually able to be kept cool enough.

I know that a product should not be released that could not cool itself adequately but in all honestly can laptop cooling really cope with the heat output and not cause premature component failure.

As ever guys and gals i am open to all suggestions for a similar spec. The sky is not the limit with budget, my piggy bank will stretch to the £1200 area.

Can u get laptops with a smaller screen but higher resolution ?

Something that squares over 1280x1024.

I have a 15.4" @ 1680*1050, so yes you can get higher res on a fairly small screen. A friend has 1920*1200 (iirc) at the same size, a lenovo... thinkpad. Don't know the exact model no.

Mine is a Asus S97V barebone out of the back of my head, fairly good internals but the externals are not that good.

Hi all

Sorry for the delay in replying, I have not had a chance to get online today.......yet !

The one i had spec'd up has 1600x900 screen. I'm going to take a wander round a few shops tomorrow to see that sort of res up close. I dont want to get a screen with a real lacking of vertical res and not be able to view pages without lots of scrolling.

I guess the pixel density comes into it a lot.

Again it would be nice to get the real estate of a 18" screen but they are not portable in my mind.

Where would another place be to spec up a laptop build. With a quality metal case too. Is it just Sony and Apple ?

I think that is quite a lot of laptop for the price really.

One question though. How will the RadeonHD4650 1 GB far with light gaming, say COD4 / 5 .

I tried to google but kept getting the PCI equivalent card and i don't know how the laptop card rates in comparison.

Is anyone any the wiser
