New Cooler - Temp Woes

Hey guys,

So I just got myself a shiny new i5-4670k and along with it a Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced C1, but I'm a bit concerned about the temps. It's not the thermal compound application, i've re-applied it and double checked the mounting and everything. Everything looks good there. So I guess what I'm asking is, is it worth getting another cooler or do these temps look normal or should I look for another coooler? I have the chip at 1.2v, 4.3 Ghz getting somewhere around 60 - 70c under prime large FFT load, usually around the lower end of that spectrum. One thing that worries me is that even under load the cooler is usually cool to the touch. Ambient temperature is 13.8c (I am a viking) and a good air flow case, the NZXT Tempest Evo.

Cheers guys, let me know if I missed any info out. :)

Hey thanks for your reply.

Used the spread method but I tried dot also. Only thing that happened when I used the dot method was the temps went up around 5c ish. TIM coverage was perfect each time.

Dot never failed me. Well a small amount, not a dot ;)

To be fair, haswell cpus do run warmer compared to the previous gen so I just think you have lost the silicon lottery a bit :l.

But what about the cold cooler?

I guess it could also be the contact between the die and the the heat spreader on the actual chip? I read somewhere that Intel used thermal pads rather than solder on the haswell chips.

As long as these seem like normalish temps for this chip with this cooler I can live with it. Glad I don't have to get another cooler - this looks amazing and is completely silent.

hello, just quickly, please don't center your posts. it's infuriating :) That said, please continue.

It sounds completely normal, I had the same temps when I used the stock cooler, I'd think your cooler should be a bit better but it's nothing to worry about.
