New build advice / inspiration

Hi, first thread in a loooong time.

Intro:
Basically I'm looking to upgrade to a fresh build to replace my current rig, but I've been out of the loop for a long time and I have no idea what's worthwhile. Feel kind of how I did when I first started building and getting lost looking at hardware.

I'd appreciate any suggestions re: components to look at or advice. I'm UK based.

Current build:
FX-6300
Gigabyte 7850OC 2GB
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
Corsair AX760
Samsung 840 Pro SSD
BitFenix Shinobi

I won't need a monitor just yet as I've recently bought one, also won't need kb/mouse or OS.
Hoping to reuse the PSU from current rig to keep costs down, also the SSD for my OS. I'd like a new tower, but if it keeps the costs down enough to get better hardware I'm happy to also re-use my Shinobi
Storage HDD will be needed as my current ones aren't sufficient.

Usage:
Ability to overclock isn't really important to me at the moment. It will be used for some gaming (Battlefield 1 primarily). Game capture from console (already have the capture card), Twitch streaming (OBS) and some video editing/photoshop.
Only gaming at 1080p, but maybe a little extra grunt in reserve would be nice if I choose to upgrade the monitor.

Budget:
Nothing fixed but ideally as cheap as possible, <£750 since that would involve living on nothing but plain rice for a while. I'd like to go Intel for my next build which I know will push the price up somewhat :(

TIA.

a rough budget would be nice to have as well as if you need additional hdd storage.

I'd say z170 would be best way to go.

£1000 build around your spares

My bad, a better idea of budget might have been a good idea because £1000 is out of my range really, but that's given me a reasonable place to start. I couldn't even decide on which socket I should go with, and yeah I will need to pick up a HDD.

Have a look on PCPartpicker, they have sample builds at various budgets. Their basic gaming build sounds right up your street for 1080p gaming.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/guide/DND48d/modest-gaming-build
Thanks, that came in handy too.

PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor (£177.99 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: Gigabyte G1.Sniper B7 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£70.33 @ Aria PC)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB ( 2 x 8GB ) DDR4-2400 Memory (£73.97 @ Ebuyer)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£41.99 @ Ebuyer)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon RX 480 8GB Video Card (£234.99 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £599.27

How is this looking? I know there are cheaper boards but I've always tried to use Gigabyte for some reason, and well, it's green haha.
Memory is just a placeholder for price while I figure out how much benefit I'd get using 16GB over 8GB, and I'm still a little undecided on the RX480 until I see more information on the 3rd party versions. Finding myself tempted to go nvidia.

Doesn't look bad at all really! Will do great in games. As for streaming since you'll be using OBS you should try using opencl encoding, will help alleviate stress from the quad core cpu. You can find ssds at low prices nowadays just pick one up.

Thanks.

I can't say I've had any issues thus far with streaming from my current system apart from a terrible upload speed limit (2Mb) which was resolved after changing ISP.
I'm using OBS Studio. I've always left it on Direct3D 11, but I will give OpenGL a try on my next stream and see how it performs.
My main reasons for wanting an upgrade are that I think my GPU might be on it's way out and the FX-6300 just isn't cutting it anymore when I start editing.

I do have an SSD which will be getting re-used (only at 9.6TB total written) but the board also has an M.2 slot should I choose to go that route afterwards.

Thanks.

Not OpenGL but open CL
Use custom x264 settings "opencl=true" in OBS

If you are waiting for 3rd party 480s like you said earlier, here are the only 2 reviews i know of that are live.

pcworld
eteknix

After reading these, come to the conclusion it's a pretty damn good card. Faster than a stock/small OC 1060 for much less. Although in DX11 a moderate+ OC on a 1060 it will be faster more often than not. In modern APIs(Vulkan/DX12 as they refer too), it's far behind a 480, based off those reviews.

Interesting reading. That Sapphire Nitro+ is looking quite promising. Hopefully TTL will have a review out soon too.

Don't hold your breath Sapphire don't send TTL cards to review but there will be the Asus Strix 480 review coming out soon;). I would check out other reviewers thoughts on the Sapphire Nitro though dude I very nearly bought one but it's a side grade from my Sapphire R9 290X Vapor X.

Now you say it I do remember a video where TTL said about certain vendors don't send him things (because he was objective?), but I don't remember specifics about which vendors so thanks for the heads-up.
I'll keep an eye out for the TTL Strix review. I'm kind of hoping it isn't better than the Sapphire because I'm just not taken with the aesthetic of the Strix (even though I know it shouldn't be a factor).

The strix went live on another site.
TPU
And another more recent one, although I always question Kitguru's legitmacy. They have proven before they dislike AMD more than Nvidia and it sometimes shows easily within the written reviews. I haven't seen that on Nvidias reviews. Not claiming anything here, I haven't even read this review yet.

I'd actually read that kitguru Strix review already, but it now seems they have a Sapphire Nitro review live too where it's *just* ahead of the Strix in almost every test, but seems to run hotter (a lot of RX480 reviews saying the target temperature keeps changing so maybe that is skewing results?)

Yeah it's the driver issue. Where driver forces 65C target temp but BIOS is trying to get a 75C target temp. So just depends. It probably will run a little hotter since less fans but it's much quieter it seems.

TTL has shown on his FB he has a Sapphire RX480 Nitro along with a powercolor Devil RX480, MSI RX480 Gaming X and MSI GTX1060 Gaming X. Maybe our prayers have been answered ;). I think those nice guys at OCUK sent him the Nitro to review :)

I literally saw that 10 mins ago on Facebook. Looking forward to that getting a going over, also interested to see how the Powercolor Devil does.

Is your FX overclocked?

With stuff like Vulkan and DX12 seriously reducing draw calls on AMD I would be tempted to keep the CPU and give it a decent OC.

Though bear in mind that's the £199 4gb card on review there with slower memory and lower clocks.

Not as such. I disabled the turbo and run it at a permanent 4ghz. Only using a CM TX3 cooler so haven't ever pushed it, but it's starting to show it's age so I feel an upgrade is the better option. If I was only going to use it for games I can see your point though.

I have seen the PCworld review as well, now I'm just waiting on the TTL opinion. I would be looking to get the 8GB variant.

I've not watched/read many other reviewers enough to trust what they're saying, but having seen it before I know Tom will straight up say if it's garbage/what the better options are.

Actually there are significantly adding more draw calls. They take advantage of more threads so more draw calls can be added onto other cores instead of tacking it into the first thread. AMD FX cpus are not great anymore. What they used to have in advantage of multi threaded performance has now basically gone. In addition Intel's vastly superior single thread support just puts it that much further ahead.
