New Blu-Ray player - Samsung PDP1400/XEU 1400 or PS3?

Right so currently I have a PS3 which I (obviously) use for games. It's also my main Blu Ray player on my 32" 720p/1080i Samsung TV.

However, I'm looking to move the Samsung TV and PS3 into the "games room" and then also use the TV for my 360.

I am buying a 37" Toshiba 1080p Regza for the front room and want to get a player to go with it as I hate faffing about moving my PS3 about whenever I want to watch a Blu-Ray

The PS3 is £279 (cheapest I could see for just console) - 40gb

The Samsung BDP1400 is £199 or £229 with a few BR movies (5 i believe)

Now from what I can gather, the Samsung plays BR's OK but is always going to be restricted to BR spec 1.1, whereas the PS3 can be updated to the latest 2.0 BR Live specs.

Also the PS3 does awesome upscaling of normal DVD's which is another plus for it

The real question is - do I pay a little bit more for the PS3 (and the added price of a cinema remote, the controllers are annoying to use for movies) or do I grab the Sammy 1400 for less money?

I'm erring on the side of the PS3 at the mo, any thoughts appreciated.

If you've got the cash get the PS3! Then you can play your games on the big screen too if you've got mates round, and having 2 ps3's is definitely cool lol

Ye the games will be on the smaller screen probably, unless the missus is out - the main reason for getting a another TV :)

Yea I agree, the PS3 is worth the extra as you say, its one of the few players that can be upgraded to the new Blu-Rays, and the extra perks it comes with over the standard player should be worth the price gap imo

nice choice of tv,i have one as well:D

might wanna have a freind round to help when you get it as its rather heavy to carry by yourself(had to carry mine all the way up 2 sets of stairs, alone:( )

Meh, carried bigger stuff up the stairs (32" CRT TV :0)

Ye tell me about it, the Samsung I have gets loads. Mind you, it came with a cloth specifically for cleaning it that works a damn treat :D

a little curve ball, a media centre based around http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-065-LG&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=

a option if u have lots of extra parts at hand, would probably work out dearer though.

or i would just go with the cheapest option with decent inputs and wait for the price drops on the latest models....

but the ps3 gets great reviews for playback.

or if u could test ur existing ps3 against the samsung and see what performs best.

Ye the trouble is that the Samsung still isn't what I'd call "cheap". If it was like £100 then I'd be all over it, but £200 is a little close to the PS3 price.

I could build a media centre PC, but I'#d need a case and a few other bits which kinda discounts that

yep, i take ur point about cost. i have only seen 1 ps3 and i am not a console hand but i was impressed with it, build quality for one, quite heavy.

Very good build quality. I saw that some BDR=W's are £88, but perhaps I'll save buying one for my main PC :)

Check out AVSForum. Many people still opt for the PS3. The only thing the PS3 lacks is the ability to decode True HD Audio which is only truely beneficial if you have more than your home theater in a box setup, and you have true 7.1 properly set up. Though the PS3 lacks it, there has been speculation that the 2.0 update WILL allow for True HD Audio (lossless, uncompressed, etc.)

/me sticks hand up

i've got true 7.1 setup.. and for some stupid reason it won't take it through hdmi :S

that aside how come it only does 'upto' 5.1 via optical but 7.1 via hdmi?!

my opinion and you've more or less made your mind up in the first post with justifying it is get the ps3 mate

Maybe toslink/optical doesn't have the bandwidth required for 7.1?
