New AMD Gaming Rig

Hey guys,

Happy new year! Hope no one is hungover!

I'm building a new AMD system for gaming on. Basically I'll let you know what I've ordered now and then post up pics of each stage of the build and then finished pics. If anyone has any questions about any of the parts I'm using the ask away!

I'm new to the whole overclocking thing (hence why I joined the forum ^^) but the last build I did for a friend we got the i5 pre-overclocked bundle from OcUK and it kills games matched up with a GTX570. I though, I want some of that! He also went for a SSD, now I want a SSD. Also, being a mix engineer (music stuffs) I need my room to be quiet so I'm building this to hopefully run well and be very quiet so I don't have to turn it off every time I need to listen to something).

So, here are the parts that are on order! (most arriving tuesday although I already have mobo, ram, psu and noctua case fan because OcUK messed up my delivery!)

Fractal Design R3 Midi Case

1 x Noctua NF-P14 FLX Vortex-Control 120/140mm Quiet Case Fan (I got this to see if it's quieter than the Fractal fans, I may swap out all the fans for them if I like it)

Corsair TX 750W ATX PSU (Couldn't stretch to the modular although I really like the HX, I used it in the last two builds I did. I'll just have to be really crafty with managing the cables!)

Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX Mobo

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

Noctua NH-D14 Cooler (After watching Tom go on about this on YouTube how could I order anything else?!)

Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal Compound

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz

HIS ATI Radeon HD 6970 2048MB GDDR5 (with the intention to Crossfire in the near future... will the 750W PSU be alright for that?!)

Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (Will RAID 0 as soon as I can afford another one!)

DVD Re-Writer

Razer Gaming Tool & Mouse

I did consider it, but thought I would just go with the 6970 to be on the safe side!

I've also emailed the people I've ordered from asking if they can swap the X4 955 for a X6 1090T!

nice you could always get 2 6950s and run xfire beat a single 6970 or save a few quid grab 2 HIS 6870 exceptional cards i had 1 had to RMA it thou so now got a sapphire 6870(thanks to tom logans advice) and lets hope they do swap. def put pics up when u build it

6970 is already on route so too late now! Although your suggestions would also have been wicked! I'm hoping to get another 6970 and Xfire when I get paid later on this month!

Update on the system specs:

Now running two of the 64GB 6Gb/s Crucial SSD drives in RAID 0 as this was quicker and faster than buying one 128GB drive! I'll do some speed test on this when it's up and running so you all can see if the RAID 0 makes a big speed difference or not!

I've also got three Noctua NF-P14 FLX case fans that I will be using instead of the fractal ones (which I may run at very low speed in the roof of the case)

All parts will be here by wednesday at the latest so pics will be up then!

Eeermm,, you shouldn't run SSDs in RAID(0). Sure, performance will be awesome at first, but you cant use TRIM when running raid on SSDs they will get slow very fast.

Ahh okay!

Whats TRIM?! I can still install games to the second SSD on steam though right? For speedy loading!

Yeah you can have multiple SSDs set up, not in raid just fine. When you raid them trim goes bye bye. Heres a little somethin somethin about trim. I would throw on your OS, and any apps you want to boot with your OS. Or any games or apps you wanna drastically reduce the load times, read/write times.

Buying a 955 because I got it for £90! Can always upgrade later on

Was tempted to get a 1090T but thought I would spend the money saved on a better graphics card.

Just some specs....

Got the 955 running at 4.3GHz stable! Not bad for my first overclock

Shall upload a CPU-Z screenie tomorrow also so you can see I'm not fibbing! Can't wait to try BFBC2 and metro out on it!
