Need help choosing a laptop

Well the time has come, I've been accepted to university and will be attending in September. I am in the market for a new laptop instead of lugging my PC with me. The thing is, I have very little knowledge of what kind of laptop I should pick up.

Let's see, I would like something quick, able to play a few games (doesn't have to be maxxed and by no means a gaming laptop), and in the price range of $1100-1500 (could be a little more depending on funds) Canadian Dollars.

Could you please recommend some brands/things I should be looking for when purchasing ?

Hmm, for that kind of money you could get quite a nice laptop.

What kind of portability do you want? I went for a desktop replacement 17" jobbie, but i can still take it in to uni.

You would probably do best to go with a well known brand. I've got a lesser known one and after the year warranty ran out i have started getting little problems.

What OS do you want on it?

Are there any ports you desperately need?

For the smaller points;

At least a 120GB HDD.

2GB RAM.

A decent GFX

Good size and quality screen.

Dual core 2ghz is what i have, but i think 2.6 is more widespread now.

etc...

well for portability I figure i'll be taking it everywhere with me so i could do with something a little bit light. At the same time, i'm a pretty big guy so i don't mind having a biggish laptop.

I was thinking of getting vista just for a change and I don't need any specific ports.

This is what im getting once i get my responses too.

Dell XPS M1530

Best laptop IMO.

15", Core2 2.4ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb HD 8600M GT, upgrade the monitor to a bigger res, for $1500. Perfect

Btw which uni's u get accept to? And what was ur averagE? No responses for me yet :(

Well I applied to Western, Waterloo and Guelph and got accepted to waterloo right off the bat, Western was next and Guelph was last. I also play football, so that was a big determining factor in how fast i received my responses.

I have an 82 average with my first semester grade 12 courses. Which one's did you apply to?

Also, thanks for the recommendations i will take a look

Thats good. I applied to all the main ones in southern ontario except for Queens, % needed was too high.

I have an 83% average with 5 courses so far, and i got 3 more coming this Sem 2 88% and 1 74%, CALC / VECTORS IS SO HARD!!!

Havent got accepted anywhere yet :(
