Need help choosing a 780.

Summary: Returned a faulty EVGA 780 that I bought on offer. Got credited instead of replacement, store doesnt wanna pay difference (as it is no longer on offer).

So now im in a headache choosing a new one.

One of the reasons I liked the EVGA one was because it was OC'd from the factory, and I've never tried OCing a GPU so it saves me the pain if its factory OC'd.

Most people recommend Asus and MSI, but the Asus runs at only 941MHz (boost clock), whereas most other factory OC'd cards run +1000MHz. And I get discouraged with MSI when I watch a video on YT showing the fan noise: /watch?v=Sn4ynK8WxPg

So what do? I've looked at the Zotac AMP! Edition which is supposedly the most powerfull out-of-the-box-card, but I've never had experience with Zotac, nor is it a brand I hear mentioned alot. I see in some reviews it runs at 79C during load - so come summer, and its 30C or so in my room this thing is gonna run way hotter, wouldnt it end up run +80C and disable GPU Boost all together?

On top of that there's Gigabyte, Gainward (but which is 3-slot), and Palit (which is quiet, but whats up with the weird rattling/whining?: /watch?v=IDMIR6mfEo8)

I really hope someone can help...

I am sort of in the same place. I have been looking at replacing my 760, and handing that down to my son. I looked at 780's, however after researching realized I need to get to 780Ti cards or the upgrade would not be worth it. Question: Can you save up some Kroner and bridge gap to Ti territory?

There's no way im afraid. I originally looked at a 770 due to its fair pricetag, but learned that it ran on an old chip. So I decided to pay the extra cash to get hold of the new chip. On top of this, I also had to buy a new PSU and I replaced my chassis, both from Corsair making it quite pricey.

Even if I had the money, I find 780Ti to be too expensive, and I know I would feel bad having spent so much on a single piece of hardware.

1900x1200, I have a 2nd monitor connected but thats just for browsing. Im getting a new GPU for the very reason to play intensive games as my current doesnt allow me (295). Im definitely planning on Crysis 3 and Hitman Absolution, and will also fire up S.T.A.L.K.E.R again.

Both the MSI TwinFrozr and Gigabyte Windforce cards are very quite cards, although I personally prefer the MSI Gaming range over Gigabytes offerings.

Have you considered AMD?

- Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
- Powercolor Radeon R9 290 PCS+ OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
- MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

No, I had my 295 for 5 years and that was a Gainward and its still running. I would get a Gainward if it wasnt for the fact that their 780 model is a 3-slot.

In regards to the MSI I linked a video in my first post showing the noise from a Twin Frozr, which to me seem kinda extreme.

Just like Zotac I've never had experience with Gigabyte GPUs.

I may not be brand loyal but I wanna stick to Nvidia. :)

Ugh, I just dont get how that can be when in the video it seems so loud :confused:. I assume its the same cooler even though its a 770. At 60% (0:40 in the video) it seems rather noticeable to me, more than I want it to.

Maybe its affected alot by the fact its out in the open and not in a chassis, and a lousy camera sound?

Either way, it would be interesting to hear if anyones had experience with the Zotac. If nothing comes up, im gonna have to decide between the MSI and Asus.

Asus seems to be drawing a hell lot more power than the MSI. Can these two Power Consumption charts really be correct?

I hear what you mean, though once its in your case, chances are that you will not hear it too much. I have no experience with this card, but this is my assumption.
 
Pretty sure its gonna be an Asus. The cooler design seems to be of the best, and I love the backplate. From what I read the "real world" performance actually surpass the 1000MHz because of how cool it performs under load. On top of the ariflow from the new Carbide chassis I dont think I can go wrong.

Not that I did so with EVGA, I was just unlucky with a faulty one.

That's a good choice I think. You get a backplate and a great cooler :D

by "surpasses real world performance" what do you mean?
Its a shame you won't give AMD a go as the 290 custom cooled cards are really very good and can be much faster than the 780. I'd also say that while the ASUS is a quiet card the cooler isn't that good and in my experience Asus' build quality on non ROG products seems to have taken a dive recently :I. I've had a few problems with my 280x, which is practically the same cooler.
