My Summer AMD Project

Well as some of you may or may not know I am also moving to the dark side sometime in the near future. With the help of Kempez and inspiration of XMS I have managed to price up a possible system or a system similar to what I could get.

I have decided that instead of getting an agp mobo and then later this year having to upgrade to pci-e and new gfx card, I will buy a decent mobo, a starter gfx card and leave room to update to a 6800 later in the year.

This is what I have so far. Your ideas are welcome and any new suggestions will be taken on board. But please keep in mind my budget. I am by no means well off so please keep to a reasonable budget. I don't want to stray very far over £300. The system I have priced out seems very good but as I said any suggestions are welcome.

CPU

AMD A64 3000+ Winchester

I'll be getting this from FragTek as seen in this thread. It also includes an XP-90 which is a good deal.

£70

MOTHERBOARD

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D AMD Athlon 64 Socket 939 Motherboard

I can get this from many different places but here seems to have it the cheapest at the moment.

£105.86

GRAPHICS CARD

Leadtek 6600GT-TD PCI-Express 128MB

A 6800GT will be too expensive for me so this seems like a good start until I can afford one. It will probably perform better than my 9800pro at the moment anyway. Is available here.

I think that the graphics card is up to most discussion as I think the DFI is a great mobo and frags deal is to good to miss. I heard leadtek are a good brand but I don't really know much about graphics cards so help me out guys. Reps wil be awarded.:wavey:

llks pretty 2 me :D and frags winnie was prob a poor clocked due to a weakness in his h/w sumwer else (if his diego is ne fing 2 go by) GR8 dave welcom 2 AMD :) and ur 2 comp folding farm :worship: :worship:

Looks like a good setup youre going to build there Dave! All things considered that winnie isn't all that bad. I reall can't complain with a 700mhz stable overclock on a $150 processor!

Leadtek makes top notch vid cards no matter what anyone says... They're solid as hell and they overclock like a mofo!

Got a lot of bundle!

I'm using the AGP version of MSI 6600GT. It's worth the money I think.

you think its worth the money lol :rollingla

also nice rig dave and i wouldnt really even bother upgrading the video car, lol its a kickarse one as it is, what are you going to do with your other setup?

cheers for the feedback guys, reps will be given when i can be bothered.

yeah to be honest the cpu ould be the first thing i upgrade and i think the winnie will be a good entry level cpu to learn how to overclock an amd. i don't think i will get much further than frag but he was cooling on water so i will be glad if i get a 700mhz oc!!

well this isnt going to be a whole new setup, i wil still be keeping case, hdd ram etc and just be upgrading mobo, cpu and vga. the spare mobo and cpu etc will pobably be sold to try and redeem some of the money spent on this project. hopefuly i can get £150 for it all and then i am only spending £150.

at the moment the plan for spending is this.....

buy frags winnie next week, i have that money just about.

buy the mobo around july time

buy the gfx somewhr around late july early august. it all depends on the money i have coming in over the summer. if i can be bothered getting a job then it will speed up the buying process ;)

dave lol your exactly like me, i buy one thing at a time and it takes me ages llol good luck with the saving

The Winnie doesn't require wc to get that overclock out of it... You'll be able to do it with the XP-90 given u have some good ram.

KENYAAA...OOOOH KENYAAAAA...

Anyway. The MSI has a lot of extra crap bundled with it but to be honest you don't need that crap at all. I personally think the Leadtech is better value as it is OC'd out the box to 500MHz already, whereas the MSI is only at 400MHz. Well worth getting the Leadtech...get it! :D

yeah definantly the leatek

hmmmm i am thinking....the 3000+ venice is only a tenner more than frags winnie. i think that might be a beter option tbh. i just priced up the system on newegg. i comes to $410 or £223 plus shipping to UK. that is amazingly cheap and i think i could afford that int he next month or so.

the only thing is this......

the DFI motherboard on newegg is refurbished (£50!!!!!) does this make much of a difference???

the 3000+ venice is OEM and so does not come wiht a HSF. maybe i could ask frag really nicely for his spare stock one or maybe somebody in the UK can donate one???

thoughts please people??
