i am going to be building a NEW render farm soon...

the 8[sup]+[/sup] rack-based slaves will be i7s, have 16GB of ram, and have small storage(SSD for OS) (very extendible)

the main workstation will be my future 'beast' (sr-3 xeon based, with Quadro Plex 7000 and Tesla C2070)

the storage will be some form of network attached storage (NAS) device.

the rest that i need, i already have. and... the two rigs i already have will be converted into a composite server.

i just thought i would let you know what my plans are for this year

From the name, it sound like a system just for doing a lot of visual rendering. Please forgive my lack of knowledge. Would you care to explain a bit more?

This sounds daunting, but it looks like it's going to be a really powerful system with x2 CPUs?

It'll be more than two CPUs.

Sounds to me like he'll have at least 8 i7s in the render farm with another two Xeons in his workstation.

I don't do any rendering, but I am a server guy. What OS and software will you be using? This is going to be a rather interesting project, I'm jealous. Be sure to post up a log and pics when you get started.

Wow, thanks for explaining it. Sounds like it's going to be 8 server racks if that's what they're called? I wonder where all the systems will be located?

^^^ as said:

the farm will have a minimum of 8 x i7s (64 x threads) @ 4GHz

the main workstation will have 2 x Xeon-EP @ ~3.6GHz (plus 1452 cuda cores and 16gb of GDDR5) (oomph!)

this will not be a gaming rig - lol - it will be used for work (and hopefully pay for itself)

as for the OS:

the main workstation will have win7 x64 ultimate, and the farms (slaves) will have win7 x64 Home Premium on them, and just hold 3dsmax2012x64 (and plugins) on them.

3dsmax comes with its own queue manager (unlike other 3d apps)

the main workstation will cost about £4000

each farm node will cost about £500-600 each (bare bone bundles, psu and SSD) (one at a time - lol)

a Netgear ProSafe 16 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch ~£150

the slaves will share a WD 'My Book Live Personal Storage' 3TB NAS Drive, for images and job data, etc.. ~£200
