Hi there I'm new to all this really. I'm a pretty advanced user of PCs but only really with software, so i thought this summer i would set myself the challenege of building a half decent machine for a reasonable price. I have uploaded a PDF to my website showing what I am goin to be using. I dont play FPSs or participate in online gaming, but I do design website, do a little programming and play the odd sim game. here's the link

Let me know what you think I'm open to criticism and advice!

I would switch the innards to a C2D system mate. Much more for youre money. Personally I think the case is horrid and probably wouldn't be the nicest to work with on a first install but if you like the look of it then its entirely up to you.

Also perhaps a higher powered power supply unit to allow for expansion in the future.

excuse the ignorance but C2D?

oh and the case is the one thing i'be bought already! i agree with the power supply thing, but with the money available and weeks of searching, i think i've found one that suits me for now! I'm not putting much hardware in there just enough to keep me going without being excessive to my needs!

Intel line of processors. Whats your budget? could advise some alternatives easier that way

oh yeh i get ya now Core2Duo! I dont know why but I have a thing with AMD and when i worked out an equivalent C2D system it was around £100 more, i would like to spend no more than £300! which is roughly what all that comes to! i may be using DVD and HDD from current PC anyway!

Any recommmendations on Operating System? i have access to XP Pro and Vista

I have to agree with llwyd, go with a C2D setup and 4gb of ram.

I would also go with Vista 64 as it runs perfect nowadays and is very smooth.

personally i like your spec as it is, AMD processors are good, and stable, and if it was my choise, i'd go for your system spec over llwyds

but i must admit, core 2 duo offers more power ...more....grunt....for your money..

either spec would leave you with a damn nice system though :)

Thanks ionicle, at the end of the day its my choice but I think i've done well choosing the specs. I will be upgrading to 4gb by end of the year anyway! and as for operating systems i'll probably go for XP then upgrade later! i've also decided to use my old dvd and hard disk drives as i found some converters! so i've saved a little there!

tis always good to get a rig for less than you budgeted for :)

personally, i prefer AMD as a company, and they need all the suport they can get at the moment, even if they dont perform as well as intel for the same price...they do have enormous amounts of stability on their side...

as everyone else said just get a budget C2D, and and 4GB if u can, 2x 2GB sticks is usually cheaper than 4x 1GB sticks and usually runs better, just my two cents before you buy

well i definately need to sleep on all this! thanks for all your help guys im pretty sure where i'm going now! think i'll wait for my case to arrive before buying the other bits!

Definitely heard 2 x 2GB RAM causes less trouble and leaves potential for 8!

I also understand XP won't see all 4GB unless it's 64bit install. Vista actually works well once the GUIs have 4GB to run around in.

I'm about to try my new build when I pop the CPU in tomorrow, although I've used a plain old beige box to deter tea leaves, unlike your more radical approach. ;)

OK im going to have to step in and advise you ignore advise based on irrational preference.

The facts are that you will see better performance for your money and will be entering the field of bang up to date technology, meaning that there are still many advancements to be made on the intel platform which you will be able to utilize with less expense and work were you running a C2D rig. If you buy the AMD rig, you will be paying the same money, getting far less performance and will be investing in a completely, 100% dead end.

I and many people here are more than willing to guide you through anything you are unsure about so please dont hesitate to ask.

I think ionicle was backing AMD from the moral standpoint, if AMD go bust it makes it more expensive for all of us. Also 775 doesn't have that much of an upgrade path- it's all out of date as soon as nehalem comes along, but admittedly it does offer the best bang for buck right now. AM2+ boards will accept AM3 Processors, so I'm told although some of the newer features will be disabled on those proccys, but if you're the kind of person who doesn't upgrade their mobo often, and the jedi do pull something out of the bag... who knows?

ide definately say.. core 2 duo.. best bang for your buck. Ide also say 8500gt or even 9600 if you can stetch.

775 allows for plenty and upgrade from a core 2 duo. Just not the amazing new ones.

yes, 775 offers the best performance per price, but personally, if it was my money, i would do as you intended to do as you started, and invest in an amd processor, kerotan has a point that i hadnt thought of, if nobody backs AMD, they will go out of business, and nobody will be able to chalange intel in the processor market, and that would not be a good thing as prices would go up, and there would be no reason for them to lower them.....

personally, i am suporting amd, because they are the underdog

but i will not deny if you go with intel, you will get more processing power for your money...

it is just my preference, and it seems yours, as you chose amd on your own before seeking advice here.....

I think theres enough people like yourself to keep them afloat mate.

Think this is a discussion for another thread. Dont want to guilt anyone into making a decision. He has the facts its up to him how to proceed
