i think it may be my PSU though

since i got my new gtx550ti TFII-OC yesterday, every thing was going fine

until 30mins ago (i am typing this on the YING rig)

i decided to see what it would be like folding

it was flying with the 550 (18K PPD)

i then added then 1055t SMP6 (it went up to 24K PPD)

all was fine

then i added the 6870 (i was expecting 28K PPD)

it was okay for about 30secs

then BANG!

loads of crackling and a whole lot of burning smell

luckily i was arms length from the power switch

but...

no power at all

i just hope it is JUST the PSU

i am going to take the HALE PSU from this rig to test the main rig

i hope i haven't fried my rig - i will be severely peeeed off

wish me luck guys

just watched tom's 6GHz YT video, and used it to chill out and calm down before i undo all my cable management in both rigs (sorry tom), to swap over the PSUs.

going AWOL for a while

twas the PSU

phew - i am back on the main rig - YAY

but, i now need a newer, more up-to-date, beefier PSU

i need one ASAP, as my file server (render slave) is offline

any recommendations???

NOTE: i won't be folding-like-a-lunatic again (you gotta larf!)

Corsair ax850, ax1200 or the newly released hx1050.

+1 Corsair PSUs are rock solid. I remember whenever TJHarlow did a build he always pulled out a corsair HX series, so i thought "good enough for TJ then it good enough for me" I would definately go with an AX series if i was in the market for a PSU

thank God it was just the PSU bro

this is the one that died...

Antec TruePower Quattro 1000W PSU = sheeee-ite!!!

and as the reviewer mentioned.... only 5 cables. so i had to run both GPUs (1x 3pin and 2x 4pin) off one rail, and the culprit for my loss was FAH.

too much power to fold was being pulled through one rail. all my other rails are used up.

for the time-being, i have dropped back down to one GPU (6870)...

i will not put my 560ti in it until i get a larger PSU than the one i am using, temporaily... it is part of the snow white rig and it is only a HALE 650W

Glad to hear it was only the PSU.

I second the corsairs. I have used the TX models in quite a few systems now, they are in both of my rigs too. The AX is even better if you're willing to pay the premium.

i just used the PSU calculator here

my rig needs 522W will just the 6870 in it and 634 with the 560 and 6870 (in lucid)... so in theory a 850W would have alot of headroom...

...but if i am going down that unknown-future-upgrades-path, i might as well get the most powerful and best there is... the HX-1050

good job i ain't skint

IMO, the Corsair AX850 W is perfect for you right now, but I suppose it depends on how much you plan to upgrade. It could run 580 SLi fairly easily though, so I duno

i got one of these powercooler ones, had some good reviews plus it had 4 6+2pin (8pin i know) connecters for my crossfire when i get it, and 2 rails for hdds and such. and very quiet.

Glad to hear it was just the PSU, still a big deal but at least it was one of the less costly, or a multiple component burn out.

I am assuming it died because you were pulling too much power from it? I always thought that the PSU's had an internal circuit breaker or fuse to prevent that type of failure.

i dunno mate... but the PSU stank of burnt plastic.

i have been thrashing it over the years and even though i cleaned it regulary, it served me well. at least it wasn't a 980x
