My GPU seems to be struggling playing games at full settings with my new monitor

Hi All,

I brought a new monitor this week (Samsung S27850D) its beautiful and I love it, but I seem to have one issue.

I play wow on full settings, everything max and in the native resolution 2560x1440, but it seems if my GPU can't handle it (Gigabyte GTX 580 soc) when I move or fly images flicker quite noticeably if I reduce the settings to fair or normal it seems a little better, but I want to play on full settings to get the most out of the monitor I have....

Do you think I will need to buy another GPU and run in SLi?

What do mean by flicker ??? could be screen tearing if your not using vsync.. Try running afterburner and monitor your FPS, let us know what happens...

Yeah vsync is enabled and its defo not screen tearing, its like the GPU is taking longer to process the images when there is movement. My fps is already lower from when I had my last monitor.

could be the cards having issues coping with that resolution due to vram. try running it at 1920 x 1080 and see if theres any issues.

I have run it at 1920x1080 and it seems fine.

If i put 2 cards in will it solve the issue?

no, you will need a card with a larger amount of VRAM

right if its a memory issue them another card will not help thats just raw power the memory of both cards do not combine and increase memory only a single card with more memory will. But if its only in that one game i say just run it at 1920 x 1080 and be done with it.

I brought the monitor so I can play this game in 2560x1440 other wise I would have just kept the other monitor I had....

Well if Vram is the issue then the 7950 and 7970 are probably good choices considering they have twice the Vram of the 580.

Nah i was thinking I would sell my other one and buy this one.

What are the best cards for 2650x1440 res? I've heard anything above 1920x1200 nVidia are not so great and AMD's range would be better, can you advise on this?

GTX680 should do the trick, but if you want a bit more VRAM headroom a 7970 would be the way to go.

If you are running resolutions that high AMD 7xxx series is the way to go. Considering there are already games that are maxing out my GTX580 at 1080p I cant imagine a 2gb card will be much better with the same game at that res. Nvidia is awesome but the shot themselves in the foot with lack of memory on both the 5xx series and the 6xx series. If 4k gaming catches on Nvidia will be left in the dust.
