I’d really appreciate your advice on an ivy bridge build. I have recently gotten dangerously hocked on overclocking by watching Tom on Youtube. And I could really use some good advice on this build. I’m not a millionaire but I value quality components and Silence. I’m not that big of a gamer but I’d just like a really kickass setup and not always feeling like a particular game/app isn’t running at its full potential.

CPU:

Intel Core i7 3770K

MOTHERBOARD:

Asus Sabertooth Z77

RAM:

8 GB RipjawsX ] F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=403&c1=1&c2=3

CASE:

Corsair 600T special

COOLER:

Cooler master Hyper 612S http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cases_cooling/coolermaster_hyper_612s_review/1

GPU:

2 x Sapphire 7870 OC edition in Crossfire

Storage:

Corsair Series GT 240 GB

PSU:

Corsair 850AX

My questions:

- Im really a noobs when it comes to ram, but Id like get some really kickass blazing fast ram. So what to buy?

- Case: I really like the look of Corsair 600T´s window and I just wanted to hear if you guys might have some other cool case options with a window?

- Cooling: I already own the Cooler master 612S and id would like to know if I’d be able to OC my ivy bridge on that, given that ivy runs hooter. I’d be ready to settle for a bit smaller overclock but not by a lot.

- GPU: I also already own a 7870 and its been treating me well however I’d like to max out my games and I’m having trouble fully doing this with just one card. Would you advise me against going crossfire on 7870, hear it performs well but still I’d like to get your genius input J

- Storage: Would it be better to get 2 x 120 GB Corsair GT and go raid 0 or just buy a big 240gb. Have gotten different opinions on that

- PSU: Would you recommend my buying the corsair ‘AX or the `HX, id be happy to pay a bit more for it running quite. I believe that 850W is enough? Id like to avoid using all my dough on a PSU if I can avoid it. But still silence is key.

Thx for your time

That is some really good ram that overclocks well, thats a pretty decent cooler and should allow for some decent overclocking, if you want to go crossfire then do it the performance will be good, you would be better off getting two 120gb and raid 0, as for the psu im not really qualified to talk about psu's

I hope i have been helpful

QUESTION 1 - Have you looked at some G Skill RipjawsZ- It is a good set of ram

QUESTION 2 - Nope, the 600T Gets my vote

QUESTION 3 - : IMO, The 612S Seems good enough

QUESTION 4 - What is your Budget for a GPU?

QUESTION 5 - It would be faster to buy 2 X 120 GB SSD'S and put them in RAID 0

QUESTION 6 - I'd go for the Corsair AX850

Everything looks rock solid with the exception of the CPU cooler. If you plan on over clocking (you say you do) then you should spend the money on a decent CPU cooler.

Edit: I would suggest choosing a better graphics card. You would be better off with one high end card then two lower end cards in crossfire.

Well, I don't want to get too involved as I don't want to show any biased toward my company's products. So, I will answer some of your questions.

PSU: Go for the AX series. Fully modular design. I've never heard my PSU and I have the HX850. Got it before the AX's were out. More than likely you'd want a 1200 watt PSU, since you'll be running crossfire and a z77 mobo.

For storage, I went with a 120GB SSD for apps and such, then I have 3 HDD's for storage. Personally, I'd just go with a bigger SSD. Raid 0 doesn't help at all if one crashes, you still lose all of your data since it's split across the 2 SSDs. As far as performance. I don't see any real world advantage to doing raid on SSDs as they are already insanely fast.

I would honestly get another HDD if I were you to house pics, docs, etc. The less you have to write to your SSD the better.

When looking for good ram, look for low rated voltages, tight timings and i'd say at least 1600MHz in speed for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge. The low volts and tight timings all for easier overclocks if you ever wanted to OC your ram. (Also make sure your ram can fit under your heatsink if the cooler your using is large)

The 600T is a great case, so if you like if go for it.

The 612S is ok, but there are better coolers out there. Something like a Hyper 212 Evo would make a good choice, or an NZXT Havik 140 or Noctua NH-D14 at a higher cost.

Two 7870's would be blazingly quick, just make sure your mobo runs the cards at PCI-E 3 x8, x8 bandwidth (which the Sabertooth does indeed)

Two 120GB Force GT's in Raid 0 is the best option, they will be amazingly fast

Go for an AX if you can afford it, but the HX is a great choice too

xf 7870s is lovely. An 850w of any corsair origin will be plenty.

I'd get the 3570k not the 3770k - you won't need hyper threading and for the £75 it costs I just don't think it's worth "just getting it" yet.

Better cooler, NH-D14, H100 or Havik 120.

Any particular reason for the sabertooth? You pay for the armour so if you like it that's fine but an msi gd65 is cheaper and overall probably slightly better...

Get a WD caviar green for storage.

Under the assumption that most here do not like stripping out their OS because a drive failed, or got slow because Trim doesn't work on RAID I'm going to say go for the one drive. The difference in speed will not be noticeable unless you regularly transfer hundreds of gigabytes of data in huge chunks to your drive. 240GB FTW.

I'll also put a plus one for the Noctua D14, as that is so quiet, it's worth paying the extra for. Personally I'd go for one high end card, then you have the option to crossfire later, but that's my opinion. Maybe I'm less enthused by crossfire than most, but having the ability to play all games without some driver or optimization coming in is important to me.

Thats would be the smartest but as I said I already have an 7870 so it'll be cheaper to just buy an additional card.

Really appreciate the quick feed back

I would suggest taking a look at the crucial 16GB (8GBx2), Ballistix Smart Tracer 240-pin DIMM (with LEDs), DDR3 PC3-12800 memory module kit when it comes to ram tbh ( 1024 X 64 )

I would say everything is great except the CPU cooler if you plan on getting a big overclock that cooler probably won't perform very well. if I were you I'd get a H100 or an NH-D14. If you are stuck on something like the 612 you could probably spare some money and the the 212 EVO I haven't looked much into it and have not seen specs to prove it but I've seen some say it preforms equal to the 612. Coolermaster also has a vapor chamber/traditional heatpipe cooler that just came out that seems promising. A review I read using the 3570k @ 4.6GHz said the load temp was a decently low 63 degrees Celcius with a single fan and not much difference with two fans.(my intel stock cooler does that on an i5 2500k @ 3.3ghz...) Also if you want to utilize what is IMO a big feature of Ivy Bridge go for some really high speed ram as the memory controller is much better than the Sandy Bridge although 2133 is plenty fast.

I was in the same spot as you last year and got a 6850 thinking I would just get another when I can. Then after a couple months I was not happy with the 6850 and bought a 6950. I recently sold the 6850 on ebay because it did not fold well. The 6950 will be replaced as soon as I can sell it on ebay.

Well you do have some good specs there and I am sure you will enjoy your rig.

I have also been looking a bit at

SilverStone Raven RV03

Ive seen Toms review, but id like your opinion. Doesint seem like a lot of people buy this case and i find that strange if its so good as its made out to be. How is it noise wise?

Do anyone of you have any experience with this? Negative/Positive ?

i think that the SilverStone Raven RV01 the most awesome looking. But buttom line is that i wanna choose the quietest one, cooling my setup the best.
