My First Proper Build, Got any tips?

Well I am building my first rig and my budget is $3600, please tell me what you think about it and if there is anything I should replace.

Intel Core I7 3960k

Evga x79 4-way SLI Classified

Possible 2 Watercooled MSI HD7970's

Corsair AX1200w psu

Mushkin Redline Ridgeback 8GB(2x 4Gig dims)

Samsung Spinpoint F3R 1TBx2

Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD

Coolermaster Cosmos II

Watercooling-XSPC

Ok Guy's and Girls, I have changed it all up, I am gonna do a watercooled rig now and may even switch to IvyBride-E Sense I plan to build this sometime next year. I will also be going with the new 7000 series ATI cards sense they will be decently ahead of Nvidia. Sooooo, if anyone sees these changes, wonder what the constructive criticism will be like?

1st change that ocz psu, there absolute crap,

opt for a corsair 850az or a 1200ax or you can get a seasonic or a be quiet pau are you sliing in the future?

2. change that 2600k to a 2500k (the difference is very mininmal add the extra cash somewhere else

that lightning is a wonderful choice, best purchase ive ever made

If it was me i would look into:

Cpu: Intel I7 2600K Quad Core CPU, cant fault it but if you want to save money can always go for the 2500k

Mobo: all the ones you have said are good, just depends if you want to save money, with the price differences if there is any.

GPU: MSI GTX580 Lightning Edition, i would stick with nvidia only because you get stuff like physx with them, plus then you could always fold for the team
wink.gif

PSU: I would really recommend a corsair psu over a ocz one and 1250w seems a bit overkill with just 1 graphics unless you are going to add another one later

Ram: I would look into mushkin ram or the recently reviewed Kingston Genesis, 2000mhz doesnt really apply for sandybridge need 2133mhz

HDD: Wester Digital 1TB Caviar Black, ive got the 2tb version and its very good
smile.gif

SSD: Ocz Vertex 3 120GB, meant to be good but also have a look at the kingston v+100 range and corsair force

Case: Go with whatever you like, i would advise against the thermaltake level 10 though, it is whatever you like the looks of really they all provide decent airflow

H/S: you forgot cooling for the cpu so noctua nh-d14

What are you building the rig for mate and how many monitors do you intend using?

If its a gaming rig then go for a 2500K as the only real difference between that and the 2600K is that the 2600K has 8 threads instead of 4 which doesn't really mean anything when it comes to gaming apparently. If you do a lot of video rendering however or things along that line then you may want to go for the 2600K.

You also need to change the memory to either 1600, 1866, or 2133 as for some reason the P67 boards do seem to support 2000MHz.

This bits my personal preference but I'm not really a fan of that motherboard as when you add a second graphics card then the bandwidth of the cards goes to x8/x8 which I find completely acceptable if you where planning on buying a board half the price of this one but for that sort of money I would personally want x16x16. I must ad though that the difference between x16/x16 and x8/x8 only matters when running multiple monitors which is why I asked at the top. Like I said, this is just my personal preference.

These are the board specs if anyone wants to double chack what I'm saying.

Hope this helps.

I may go with the mushkin cuz Newegg is at a lack for the Kingston Genesis, and yeah I plan to go to ether just SLI or Tri-SLI eventually. My rig will be all about folding @ Home and Gaming....and to help me get into the world of Overclocking because I find overclocking extremely intresting and I want to think about that as a permanent job field along with system building!

Thanks mate, I was thinking of getting the Big Bang just to do a Sandy Bridge Quad Fire rig but sense I am sticking to Nvidia Its right out the door

I am gonna stick to the Maximus

Thanks for the tip, I simply saw the new Zx series and thought Meh why not try something new, oh and I am gonna stick with the Nvidia

wow Diggy you need to learn to put all that into one post bro Mods dont like double posts let alone quad posts lmao. good luck with ur build we expect to see a build log btw

Thanks mate, another little tizy, I have been hearing about Evga's P67 boards, have you heard anything promising about them?

Well I am building my first rig and my budget is $3600, please tell me what you think about it and if there is anything I should replace.

Intel I7 2600K Quad Core CPU

Asus Maximus IV Extreme

MSI GTX580 Lightning Edition

Ocz ZX 1250w

Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 2000MHz 8GBKit w/2x 4GB

Wester Digital 1TB Caviar Black

Ocz Vertex 3 120GB SSD

Silverstone Raven 03

I am still unsure on three things, the case, the motherboard, and the Graphics Card. I do not know if I should go for the Msi Lightning r6970 or with the Gtx version. I am stuck between the Raven 03, Raven 02, NZXT Phantom, Coolermaster HAF X, or the Thermaltake Level 10 GT. I like the Maximus but, I have heard that the Marshal is a bit better overclocker then the Maximus and the UD7 is a little cheaper then the two.

Budget: $3600 or about 2200£

Thanks and tell me what you guys think.

Quick Update, Cpu has been changed to the 2500K, the Ram changed to Mushkin Redline Ridgeback 8Gb kit so 2x4gig sticks
biggrin.gif
Mushkin FTW.

Secondly, thinking of trying out (once it is finally released < < ) the EVGA p67 Classified motherboard and see how it fairs against the competition.

and also planning to get the Asus Xonar Xense sound card and the headset, also gonna get a Killer 2100 Nick, and the power supply is now the AX1200w by corsair

As above, get a 2500K the 2600K wont help you more than the 2500K in gaming.

Ok guys quick question, out of these cases, for a Air cooled rig that may switch to water cooling in the future which case would be the best, remember in your choice take both looks and performance into mind: BITFENIX Colossus Venom edition(windowed), Coolermaster HAF X, Silverstone RAVEN 02E, RAVEN 03, or the Nzxt Phantom?

GTX GPU

Raven 02 Case

UD7 Mobo.

Job done, wang on an NH-D14 and some mushkin / gskill ram and youll be sorted.

YAYZ thanks Tom, I am gonna go with the RV-02 but if you get the 03 and say its worth anything I may get it but ether way I am pretty set. I got my mushkin ram chosen some Redline Ridgback FTW! I am ether gonna get the UD7 motherboard or I kinda want to wait and just see if the EVGA FTW is worth anything, maybe my first review
biggrin.gif
and it will be a good motherboard for the price point!

What about the MSI P67A GD-80?

Also with the EVGA

How are you meant to use the top PCIe slot with that thing there exactly?

Ah sharks, EVGA didn't think to put a heatpipe to link the VRM heatsinks together, and up the size of the rear most heatsink to ease the load of a smaller low profile bottom one.
