My first GPU overclock (advice please)

Evening guys and gals,

Having built and overclocked my PC with a lot of thanks to people on this forum i have decided to try my first GPU overclock.

I have an MSI 560 Ti Hawk which i know is supposed to be good for overclocking so i would love to hear your advice as to where to start and what settings etc. to use

from reading other forums this is what i've accomplished so far

I have both MSI afterburner and Kobustor

default settings

950mhz core

2100 memory clock

i upped the core to 1000 and the memory clock to 2350. I haven't upped the voltage at all yet

Now what settings do i use to check stable in kombustor before i try gaming and how do i go about checking my full potential overclock. Do you guys recommend overclocking further as i read elsewhere that the memory OC i currently have isn't anything special so i'm willing to try higher

So firstly I would say OC the core first, find its limit, record it and then put it back to stock and do the same for the memory. You can then combine the two and see if that is stable. If not reduce the mem by 5 for everyone 1 core clock until it is stable. For stress testing I just see if it can do a full run of Unigine Heaven benchmark. In terms of instability too much core will cause crashes, blue screens, red screens etc whereas too much mem will appear as artifcats ( coloured spots/tears in the screen ) so you have to pay attention more when stress testing the mem OC.

Thats how I do it anyway, im sure others will have their own approaches.

I can confirm i just ran a full loop of the heaven benchmark (at least i assume i did because it just seemed to start over again after the night scene) with the settings

1000 core and 2330 mem clock on stock voltage

Good overclock so far or is this a baby OC. shall i push it more?

Overclocking memory gives you almost ZERO performance difference. and is generally the number one cause of instability.

why do people do it then?

What would you guys suggest as a stability test outside of gaming for an extensive period (something i can just leave running for a while and how long if i do)

Notice how I said "almost" unless you a benching and trying to squeeze every little mhz out ti bump the GPU score a few points you will notice very little difference if any at all. And chances are you will notice ZERO performance gains in gameplay.

ah fair dos. Well i've decided based on yours and perturabo's comments to just go for a modest overclock.

Core: 1000Mhz

Mem: 2210Mhz

We'll see how this goes at stock and then if i encounter any problems i may just go back to stock (the Hawk comes with a nice factory OC anyway)

Yeah try that OC for a while and see how it goes, if frame rates are dropping too low in some games you can always make another profile and push up the clocks/volts further if you need to. If you made it through heaven then you are probably fine, enjoy the extra performance

ok Noob question. But with my default voltage being 1.05v what does it increase to if i add +100mv

like i said i'm new to gpu overclocking so i'm not quite sure what the scale is here?

I think it would give you 1.150 V

well i tried upping the voltage and increasing the clocks but my card just doesn't seem to like it (uniengine starts stuttering). So stuck at 1ghz clock with 2210 mem on stock voltage of 1.05. if anyone can advise regarding this problem i'd love to hear
