Hmm, an idea - what about a wooden frame with a glass middle? You can choose how big or small the glass middle can be. Can still use the same legs. Also, if it's dark, you can get toned glass. Would still be a pain in the ass to clean, but not so much because of the smaller size. I personally don't like second levels for some reason, but maybe you could make it much smaller? Like half or even 1/3 of the depth of the bottom one? It would make the experience of sitting at such a table much nicer cause it wouldn't "press on your head" if you know what I mean. Not sure how you would secure it though. You could still use the same type of legs at the back, but you can't put a second pair at the front cause there wouldn't be anything supporting them at the bottom level. Oh wait, there would actually, if the frame is wood. So yes, that would work. If, however, the bottom level is all glass, then maybe the back legs can be moved forward a little bit so you can only use one pair of legs for the top shelf right in the middle of it, so that they sit on top of the bottom legs and the glass doesn't bend/brake. I would assume you would still be able to put a TV there, if the glass is thick enough, well with a wooden bottom level frame at least.

Sorry for the cluttered post, just wrote as I thought...
