Crivens.

So for some unknown reason my GPU idle shot from 39c to a whopping 66c for no apparent reason. I've tried bloody everything to get the temps down as they were scaring me. Then I come to find after hours of digging around that if you run multiple monitors on a 4 series the idle temps soar. God only knows why, but let it be a warning lol.

God I can't wait to get my Gelid.

Well ofc, its higher res and the lower end the card the more it'll struggle.

No that isn't why. Even with the second monitor switched off and running mirror (not extended) it does it.

It happens because when you plug in the second plug adaptive performance stops working. Adaptive performance allows the card to downclock when not under a load and thus idle @ 39c with the fan on 45%. When that adaptive performance stops working the card idles with the clocks at full speed, hence the high idle temps. The load temps however remain the same as nothing changes there.

Whether or not it can be fixed or has to be like that will no doubt be explained when they release the next set of drivers. I'm sure they have been made aware of it.

It does it because the idle clocks and mem settings have to be increased, dear lord these basic things and even Alien is moaning. Bah.

Its normal on weaker cards.

Well I wouldn't class a 470 as weak. Ho hum doesn't matter I should have it sorted later

Really? because the GTX 580 does it too

It's to do with adaptive performance. The reason that these cards were slated on release (the 470/80) for their temps was mostly down to the fact that when you installed the driver the clocks speeds were 100% at all times. So, with them like that my card will idle @ 66c and max out at 79c.

ATI were obviously quite crafty and shrewd with this. As we know, the 5 series downclock dramatically when not being used. So, Nvidia came up with this little ditty..

If you select prefer maximum performance then the card will always be at the solid clocks on the bios. If you select adaptive it downclocks when idle and not in use to keep temps down. Most of the 'issues' with GF100 were down to the drivers Tom. I mean sure, the coolers were utter gash too which didn't help but that's why when you tame up a 4xx the temps fly down.

There is an adaptive setting for multiple monitors however it doesn't seem to work. Whether this can be resolved with a driver update or whether it just has to be like that? not sure ATM. It really shouldn't matter to me soon as I have two options of getting out of it.

1. The dude comes and pays for my bike today (sounds genuine and polite, posh, even)

2. The Alienware sells and I bolt a 50" LCD to the wall, erradicating the need to run multiple monitors
