Not bad specs there mate. The C2D E8400 is a cracking OC'er, I got mine to over 4Ghz easily enough, makes me wish I had kept hold of it now:) What OS are you going for, cos 4Gb and Vista 64 would round that rig off nicely.

I'd be inclined, if you're sticking with 2GB, of staying with your current OS and waiting for Win7.

Although even if you wait for Win7 I'd definitely look at 4GB anyway. DDR2 is so damn cheap you'd be foolish not to. It would be foolish (imho) to plump for Vista and then have to plump for Win7 a couple of months later.

Well you need Vista 64 then, as to which version, if you are keeping to a budget, go Home Premium. I have Ultimate, and the extra cost isn't really justified for a gamers PC.

All depends on how long you want to wait. I personally wouldn't wait for Win 7. I jumped on the Vista bandwagon upon it's initial release, and I could have stayed with XP for some time longer. Vista is stable enough to warrant being a choice still.

It's like everything else, do you wait for DDR4, or Core i8's? If you want your new rig with 4GB anytime soon the Vista is the way forward.

I'd stick with XP, live with the 500mb-odd loss until Win7 then get the 64.

Especially as you're on a budget, and two £100 OS' in quick succession would be silly.

Well considering the price point Vista is at, and how much Windows 7 is likely to be upon initial release, Vista would seem the best option if he is working to a budget. You can buy Vista HP for around £60 if you shop around, whereas Win 7 will almost certainly come in at a greater price than this. Bear in mind it took a while for Vista to see any price drops. With SP2 in the works, Vista isn't a dead horse yet, and won't be for quite some time.

Only thing to consider is if you can find a copy of vista retail, you will (probably) get a cheaper upgrade. At the mo, if you have a copy of XP kicking around, I would use that and wait for w7...
