MSI HD7970 OC

Hi,

OVerclocking this gpu i seem to be able to hit 1250mv 1275Mhz/1700Mhz and its stable enough to run through 3dmark11 and MSI kombustor but when running furmark i get distorted images but it does that too on stock settings, could it be furmark doesnt like this card as its stable in every other benchmark ive run just about to run 3dmark vantage below is my 3dmark11 score is it ok?

1090T @ 4.1Ghz

8GB 1600Mhz ram

HD7970 @ 1275Mhz/1700Mhz

p8828 gpu 10357 phy 6294 comb 5875

just ran vantage didn't freeze or anything got p28096 graphics 32300 and cpu 20207

temps hit 64C when playing BF3 is that ok? 54C if i put fans for radiator on 100% (it is watercooled)

If you are getting weird distorted images (artefacts) on stock in furmark then you should have taken the card back from the start mate, they may turn around now and say that you can't take it back because you've overclocked it.

Do not worry though as it may be an issue with your furmark, or if it isn't then it may be ok because furmark is unrealistic load.

I'd check with more experienced oc3d members first about what your options are though, so do not take my word for it as I feel that I don't enough about this type of issue (having never previously dealt with it first hand) to make a final judgement on it.

Some cards are designed to behave strangely during Furmark, so as not to damage themselves. I'd say your card is fine (in fact, it's more than fine - what an amazing overclock!). As long as your card is stable for the things you do you should be fine - a tip I got from Sieb.

Don't agree much with that tip tbh, because what if he buys a new game that really taxes the gpu and he has to avoid it so that he doesn't damage his card?

If it were me I would return it, however it is up to you

If I were you I wouldn't have hooked it up to watercooling straight away

i got a crash after 2 hours of BF3 so reduce the core by 25Mhz to 1250Mhz and increased the memory voltage to 1625mV whats the highest voltage i can do on the core cause it appears to be stable at 1300Mhz core with 1290mV

if it was not stable in furmark why would other stress testing and 3Dmark11 not do the same thing only furmark acts strangely.

1290mv should be fine, anywhere up to 1300v is fine

Btw I would try and reinstall furmark or use different testing then

had to settle for 1225Mhz on core and 1575Mhz on memory, this might be able to go a little higher but does not offer a hugh increase in fps. gets to 63C under a Burn in test.

As I've said try reinstalling furmark

i did furmark is back to normal also re running bench marks was getting 56fps in one with 1250core 1575 memory now its getting 49fps WTF i think i give up on gpu OC ill just max out CCC and be done with it.

maxed out CCC at 1125/1575Mhz stable in furmark so far and fps hits 69 in furmark at 1080p at stock its 45 fps so a 53% increase in that program.

^^ This.Furmark is known to stress cards hard,so both AMD and Nvid have both put in measures to mess with the chip when it detects Furmark or OCCt,Amd have had it since the 5000 launch and Nvidia put it in on the 500's as well.

Do some reading.google it,there are plenty of threads about it.
