Hello Guys

I wanted some advise on motherboard.....

I am building a pc from scratch and I am going to go with i7 2600k and 16gb ram....I am not sure what motherboard to go for ...

I am not a gamer and will not use the pc to play any games....the main reason to build this pc is to do some server training so will install server OS on and have few virtual machines running on it....dual boot so widows 7 ultimate will be on the other partition....

never oc'd one before but may do this one in case i need to squeez more out of this box....normal HD one gig graphic card will do....

so thanks in advanced and would appreciate for a decent motherbaord with i7

have a nice day

I have build a server with a p8z68v-pro and ran into some issues with lan drivers, I was able to solve it, but would recommend you going with a WS board

thanks guys...wasn't expecting an answer so quick....it is out of my budget (i have about £160 for MOBO)....since you mentioned this one, I came across the third generation Intel DZ77GA-70K Z77 which will suppot the Ivy Bridge processors....any thougths about this board? also will the IV cpu be supported on motherboard made say 6 moths ago?......

TO: scientific Moustache...i hadn't refreshed the page when I replied in case anyone read it before the i put this line in....do servers need different motherboard than normal pc? can't fine the price for the Z77 on the net...I guess I will be able to next month when it comes out here (?)

DanielSK: did you put server OS on a pc like I am planning to do? how did you resoleve the issue? when you say WS board you mean ASUS boards?

Yes I do mean Asus WS boards they are the ones that I know that have drivers for Servers OSs. I used Windows Server 2008 R2 with a P8Z68V-pro a core i5 2500, 2 OCZ Agility 3 60GB SSD in raid 1 for installing the OS (also 2x Raid 1 2x2TB Seagate XT drives, Corsair PSU and a coolermaster haf 912plus case) It is running well, but was a bit of a headache to install the intel lan drivers, I didn't had any experience in building a server maybe you would figure it out right away

A normal desktop can be a server. What the limitations would be are the OS you have on the box and depending on what you are planning to do the CPU and some RAM. I would honestly lean towards like a MSI z77 gd65 or the UD5H from Gigabyte. You will get the same performance and save some money. Asus makes great boards but they IMHO are a bit over priced.

+1 for MSI Z77A-GD65

If you are not planning to jump ship into Ivy Bridge, you might consider Z68 boards. Those are on sales now.

And you mentioned you never/seldom OC, you can get those budget Asus/Gigabyte motherboard at around £70-£80, example Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 is a decent board value for money.

thanks guys......

all of you are so awsome.....never had so many replies in such a short time on any forum I have been before.....thanks a lot once again....I am still deciding and will let you guys know what board I bought

have a nice day
