Motherboard has just blown...

Hi,

My MSI P35 Neo2-FR has just blown (AKA smoke coming from it, wont switch on) It's a bad time for it to blow...so I'm going to have to get a new one...

The thing I'm worried about is that it could have taken the other things with it too! The Specs are: E8500, 4GB OCZ ReaperX PC-8500, 8600GT, OCZ Stealth Xtreme, 500GB Samsung. I just really really hope nothing has happened to them as it's a lot of moneys worth - except from the GPU.

I take it there's no way I can do anything to check? and also, what could I do about the mobo? what would be the best option for it? and could I claim something on it?

Thanks,

Max

Tough to tell whether its taken anything with it. Maybe ask a friend if they have a spare one?

If they're all ok, I would buy a new one, RMA the blown one, then sell the fixed/replacement board, that way you won't be weeks without your pc.

if its out of waranty nope, but tbh Id just cut your losses and start hunting for a replacemtent dude, thats also the only way you have of finding what works too :(

Ah, ok do I RMA it straight to MSI? I think it should still be under warranty...

I'll put up a wanted thread, however someone on another forum said that because it smoked that other components are likely to have gone...is this true?

It is hard to tell. But the smoke can have no effect on the other components. Probably just a capacitor dying. Shouldn't send any surges that will kill other components.

Ah, ok That gives me hope.

I've just looked for a warranty card or something in the mobo box but can't see anything...:(

I'll ring them up later.

Wow that's strange. Mine blew a month and a bit back! I caught it 12 days before the warranty ran out... lucky me I suppose.

The only thing you can do is buy a new motherboard and cut your losses as has been suggested before.
