Microsoft used to be hell

Was listening to an old radio show from 2002 when I was reminded of this PC World article.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/105579/microsoft_escapes_from_google_hell.html

Pretty funny at the time, hasn't worked for years tho.

just reading that article, the bit about if you type in "go to hell microsoft" or aol. You look at the amount of results returned and this somehow indicates how many people dont like these companies. I've just done the search now and the results are;

go to hell microsoft - 1,690,000

go to hell google - 16,600,000

go to hell amazon - 3,200,000

go to hell apple - 2,920,000

go to hell linux - 309,000

go to hell nathan - 2,400,000

Sooooo, doesnt look good for google...or me the that matter. Anyhoooo, just wanted to point out the silly comment of trying to match the number of results in a google search to a companies bad rep.

It's done by hotlinking a sentence on another website's content to whatever site you want. A web dev I know told me about it a few years ago, when someone pulled a similar stunt on George Bush. They created links to his website, using the text as something along the lines of 'idiot' or something. Google picked up the term being used and the site it linked to. Alot of people started doing the same, so it placed 'idiot' as having a high relevance to George Bush. Eventually, enough links were created by many people that the search term 'idiot' (or whatever the exact term was), the first result came back as Bush's website.

Here's an example - Transvestite

Google have changed thier search algorythms now though, that's why it doesn't work anymore. It was cool for a while, as there quite a few similar stunts:) There is a name for the method, can't remember it though, must be getting old:(
