Microsoft may be interested in buying AMD. But would a Microsoft owned AMD be good for the Industry?

This would be a terrible thing for Linux users. It would probably turn the company more closed source like Nvidia also which would be bad for the industry.

I dunno, they've been more open source friendly for a while now. Its still a very valid concern though.

This could go really badly. Its a good idea when you first think about it but knowing microsoft's history I doubt it'd be anything other than a train wreck.

With Satya Nadella its true they are becoming more open.I have to wonder though is it a preventative move to sort of block Steam moving to linux as they could easily make poor drivers support and gimp Vulcan on the gpu's which AMD actively helps improve at the moment (mantle).

This would be very good news. AMD needs a huge cash injection and needs to be bought out by someone huge like Microsoft. It also would be really interesting to see a product in which every part - the chip to the OS is made by one company.

you know microsoft would focus on console type specs for everything, try and have the same powered gpu in everything from phones to consoles to pc. and all that would do is remove amd from the pc gpu market unless it was on cpu gfx.
"thats how i think they would go about things though"

Everything can now run dx 12 and windows 10. and we dont see any reason to improve the hardware, because of parity.

I don't think so. the PC gaming community would cause an uproar about the inferior hardware, if everyone switched to nvidia and intel microsoft would bleed uncontrollably

I can so so many antitrust lawsuits from Nvidia, I don't know if this would fly. The only way MS could do it and reduce the lawsuits is to split out the graphics cards and just buy the CPU and APU division.

If that happened, it could change everything. MS has enough cash for RnD that it could jump start Intel and we could start seeing some nice performance jumps we have not had in a long time.

Even there there is the problem of intel. Why would Microsoft not make the OS leverage the advantages of AMD CPUs/APUs if they owned AMD?

Owning the largest x86 OS' and the largest PC gaming platform and owning AMD will not work well for the industry as a whole.

you realy have t think of it as a buisniess plan though..
add market place to windows 10 so ppl buy apps and those stupid lil games like flappy birds.
Make every phone tablet and pc work like eachother with same relative hardware.
sell more of these silly little apps.
Proffit..

I mean tripple A games are great, but they take a long time and a lot of money to develope.
Crappy little click and repeat games sell easy, and then people also buy coins or gold or diamonds or whatever the currency is or extra card packs and stuff..
and the money just keeps coming from the micro transactions.
you dont need a hugely powerful server. to keep track of small amounts of data for thousands if not millions of people.
but you do need a pretty hard core server for hosting multiple tripple A titles.

If MS can intergrate all the phones consoles and Operating systems in to 1 basic thing that can all do the same thing and its easy for each to interact with eachother then they can make a lot more money from stupid little micro transaction apps.
I cant see why they would want to develop cutting edge 3d hardware,
they would mostly want to make small APU's and throw those in everything. and probably just forget about pc gaming as we look at it.
And just treat a pc like a tablet.

i dont think it would be a good thing to be honest. atleast not for pc's
Widnows phones and consoles would probably benifit a lot.. but pc's would just get held back.
Nvidia and intell would do what they can. but MS would always have a head start by knowing how the next api will work and may even cater specifically for the hardware they develop. and just ignore instructions that intell can utilize but they cant or similar with nvidia.
And theres nothing any where that says MS cant make their api (direct x) work how they want it to as it is their IP.
not making use of instructions or features your competitor can use but you cant is not the same as deliberatley going out of your way to cripple the oppeonents.
Trying to cripple them would be something like adding a crap load more over head to a process if it is able to use an instruction set.
Simply not using that instruction set and not adding overhead is just reasonable practice.

Cant quite put a point on it atm but for some reason I think this would end up being bad for the industry, I would rather see AMD get their act together and not need to be bought and if they cant manage that then I would rather see them them bought by Samsung than MS

This would deal a magical slap to Nvidia. I mean, imagine if DX13 or what not worked better on AMD? lmao. They'd be well within their rights to, too.

I heard Samsung were interested too, though I fear they'd only care about mobile parts. It would also be a great way for M$ to cut out the middle man on consoles too.

ah found another post I made while drunk yesterday, I really should stay away from my computer sometimes :(

I also fear Samsung would only go for mobile parts. With MS I fear they might concentrate on making x-box parts and ignore the PC parts market to quite a large degree.

Now I am reading this sober and am thinking more rationally than yesterday, I think MS would be the better buyer if AMD cant sort their cash flow out on their own and need to go down that route.
If MS did things well and had a solid business plan then it could be a really good thing for AMD and consumers alike but it could be very harmful to the industry and consumers if they messed things up.

Should AMD sell up it will be a interesting situation to watch unfold.

AMD and Samsung's HBM memory team! Boom!

Regardless of AMDs cash flow, their stock price is so low that if they improved someone might just buy them out or go for a hostile takeover as their share price has flatlined.

No AMD and Hynix.. they've been together for years on HBM.

Even if MS did buy AMD, they face Licensing issues with Intel over x86 and Intel will win that and therefore, NO OTHER COMPANY can make x86 chips unless they pay intel.. That's a monopoly and won't go over well in the industry.
