Microsoft acquires Bethesda, swallowing DOOM, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and more

I rejoiced about competent engineers in Quick News thread, but my friend brought up a good point - owning Id didn't save Bethesda's IPs. :D

Edit: They also just bought the most prominent Vulkan dev.

I can only think sony are gutted they didn't pay the money first.

I think for PC were uneffected, does this mean less buggy games :D

awful news... Projects like skywind can end up receiving DMCA notices. Future support for mods in games like elder scrolls and fall out will probably not exist anymore.

These games already have official mod support on Xbox platforms... Even Microsoft UWP games like Halo have official mod support.

I think this is good for PC gamers, the fewer companies doing PS exclusives the better, Microsoft have been pretty fair with xbox to pc games, and the possibility of playing Elder scrolls online with a game pass is an interesting thought

I saw a Reddit comment noting that this is almost twice as much as Disney paid for Star Wars. It does put things into perspective.

I don't think that Microsoft is that shortsighted. They see Steam and how they've built an empire with millions of users who love using mods. Now they have the rights to several IP's that offer a lot their success to the existence of mods. It would be profoundly stupid of them to get rid of that.

The one thing I would like to see is Bethesda finally utilising a decent game engine. Maybe now MS will force them away from the horror that they use now.

I still see pinball effects in Skyrim when trying to utilise 120hz smoothness. Imagine dropping a plate in your home only to see it gradually turn into a flubber ball flying around the place at ludicrous speed. Rick Moranis would even be impressed.

On that note.

Well this excites me a little. Its a shame that we wont see it in Skyrim 6, but the future may be promising. Provided they dont take the IPs and shut bethesda down.

Seeing the loss of Fable Legends was a great disappointment for me.

I think they said that these engine changes will be in TES VI. It is releasing after Starfield

Do you really think that? You think MS would hand over $7.5 billion for them to not force ES6 out asap? They'll just tell them, yeah you know how I'm your boss now? We're gonna change some things.

MS cannot create their own exclusives. They've sucked at it for the past decade. They lost this current gen over it. Among other things. However this is essentially a exclusive purchase. Buying out one of the largest and most well known publishers in the industry to only make games for their ecosystem the DAY before Series X/S go on pre order?

Yeah they'll make sure they get ES6 asap. That's one of the biggest names in the industry around the globe. Starfield a game nobody cares about isn't going to release first unless it's basically ready now.

In regard to their engine and how it's the biggest generational leap they've had in forever. I still really doubt it'll be decent graphics... I'm expecting medicore at best. Only impressive benefits will be newer APIs and IO technology.

As per the other thread yes, that would be really cool.
