Memory Upgrade.

Ok for xmas i was on a tight budget, AMD 3000 + , A8v and Corsair Value PC3200 RAM. the latter seem to flop over and corrupt at high FSBs etc. So..im asking, can anyone point me in the right direction for some high quality Overclockers RAM :) 1gb of the stuff.

I am currently looking at this : http://www.geil.com.tw/portal/product_433_t_dc.php

But im unsure if its any good.

All help apprecieted, thnx

I heard that having high rating RAM like (PC 4400) can make a AMD64 processor not boot without a high HTT. Maybe myths...but hey i need to know :)

btw thnx.

A lot of what your asking depends on two things:

The PSU you have

and

The motherboard you are using

Then you have to look at what you want to achieve.

If you have 3.5v in the DIMMS then BH5 or VX series ram will be the flavour of the day up to around 270FSB @ 2-2-2-5 this speed beats TCCD at 300Mhz but may restrict your overclock unless you use dividers which also affects your overall performance (not by much though)

If you have 3.1v then Gskill LE is the order of the day will run up to 300mhz at 2.5-3-3-7

TCCD Ram used in the gskill is power hungry and will get warm so some sort of fan would be recommended - also a decent PSU (One of Phil's P&PC510 or if on a budget a tagan 480w).

You have a lot of options but with your CPU you will need to find out it's FSB/HTT ceiling - no good getting GSkill ram if you CPU dont like 300HTT/FSB. My Winchester for example topped out at 280HTT so the Gskill did not suit my set-up as I would not benefit from them fully.

If your CPU likes 300FSB upwards then the choice is ultimately yours but it should be between:

BH5

VX / UTT

TCCD

Good luck

Lots of infomation there, thnx i understand it a lot more now :)

However you just made my job a lot more expensive :) I am only planning to use air cooling for now, this is my first build and a phase change rig is merely a dream for the moment.

My Processor seems to do 270 HTT stable before flopping over and corrupting my registery. My current power supply is a Hiper 425 W PSU and i have noticed that it can randomly reboot at times and can cause my games to "lag", i first put this down to overheating but my processor but that is happy at 50C load.

Anyway enough offtopic tlk, do you still recommend that memory for a A8V Deleuxe board Rev 2 AGP and a 425W power supply, OR do you suggest i save my money and get a new power supply from here ?

Extra : Regarding the power supply - is it pre braided and will it fit into the coolermaster praetorian PSU bay.

Thnx for your time in helping this n00b :)

You need to change PSU I'm afraid -certainly sounds like a voltage issue (ampage to be more precise)

If you want all braided and dont want the hassle then look no further I am selling a 680w Thermaltake SLI PSU (brand new - used once to test part of a project I ran of funds for).

10x Braided Molex Connectors

4x SATA Connectors braided

2x PCI-E Connectors Braided

24pin connector (24-20pin connector included for older MOBO)

£70 delivered

Once you have the basics sorted - you can look into other areas of improvement.

If 270 is your limit then you can take a gamble that you have enough volts to get some BH5 up to 270 but reap in the rewards of 2-2-2-5 or you can go safe and get some TCCD that will 270 easy at 2.5-3-3-6 (may go tighter but hit and miss).

The BH5 at 260HTT will run your system faster than TCCD at 270HTT coz u can achieve tighter timings though. Whichever one you choose I am sure you wont be disappointed.

Cheers

About the PSU ; i cant buy it at the moment because i only have £40 which is already set aside for the new diamondback mouse :(

The memory i was planning to get for my birthday on 26th june. But looks like im gettin a new PSU instead. Anyway for future referance on my part, is the BH5 RAM you are speaking of : http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/ocz3200/ocz3200_2.htm ??

Thnx for spending your time to help me, i understand it a lot more now :)

I believe so, although better to check on google search for BH5 memory there are lists that have been compiled by manufacturer and manufacturer part number.

Gskill will be releasing some BH5 next week based on the BP808 PCB - looks as though they will be some of the best you can get at the most competitive prices.

BH5 are available through outher sources to, but it's better you check yourself as I don't believe in advertising competitors on other peoples forums.

Looks like you have learned that which you need to know.

Good luck
