Megaupload shut down

As Extra Credits said:
Megaupload was taken down today by the federal government using only existing powers. Whether or not this action was the correct one it clearly shows that the DMCA and other existing laws allow us to defend US copyrights without the draconian measures of SOPA.

So yes we could.

There are going to be a lot of angry people who bought a membership with them

This is what will happen to all sites like Megaupload if SOPA and PIPA have their way, they are the enemy of your freedom.

I agree. We will just be like China or worse.

People seem to get caught up in the moment (considering no one knows any information on the ongoing investigation taken out against megaupload)

I'm completely against SOPA / PIPA

But the megaupload thing is a lot different, I'm sure in the next month or so you will find out why.

People who think this happened in retaliation of some sort from BlackoutSOPA are mistaken but are creating a rift of dis-information

Yeah Megaupload will be something quite different.

They're currently 1 of 100s of hosting sites with memberships etc, so you'd say why them.

Never understood why people would get memberships tbh.

I know they're different, which is why I didn't mention SOPA / PIPA in the OP.

Lol, no one said it was SOPA or PIPA, people were just referring to them and saying this is what is happening with existing laws and that it is what will happen to more sites if SOPA and PIPA happen.

It was more due to the fact they were money laundering.

That is what everyone forgets about.... Sits like Megaupload are hard to take down unless if there is something like that to help it get taken down.

I for one is very said that it has been taken down as I had a lifetime membership. I did get it for free but that's not the point.

I think our freedom of expression is in danger. Goverments want to monitor everything we do at all time. What happend to our privacy rights? Many people agree to new laws that they not fully understand, or see the consequences of. I see where things are going and i think we must fight it.

Now, for the megaupload shut down and the arrested of Kim «Dotcom» Schmitz i can somehow understand why hes been arrested and the site taken down. It is said that they have been Money Laundering and doing racketeering, and thats just the top of the iceberg.

I suppose my answer to this thread sort of shows where I stand, I do not know what SOPA and PIPA stand for? I just checked the news link about mega upload at the start of this thread to see if I could find out, nothing!..

Secondly this is the first time i have heard of mega upload but at least i can gather from the posts what they are about. no acronyms required.

On to the comments about freedom of expression, please excuse my ignorance as i signed mine away whan i started a particular job so am used to just being quiet about things, however-----I do not use it so often but isn't face book a perfect place for that? or twitter or wiki leaks? I think the chinese who have something to say seem to find a way to say it, so no matter what, if you care enough about something you will find a way to let people know.

I care about al;ot of things, thankfully so do a lot of other people in this world and they voice my opinions for me.

Thank you, all of you, who ever you are.

You know i was just telling how things where going, if you are refering to my post. And ofcource any social network is the perfect place for freedom of expression.

Any social netowk like FB or the others are bad imo. They monitor you on what you say, witch sites you are visiting on the Internet, hell you even lose the rights of your own pictures. Even when you are outlogged of FB they spy on witch web you are visiting. Well i think that is if the website has a FB like mark on it. FB are getting rich from selling information about your Internet use and they are also doing direct advertising from what you like on the Internet. I have deactivated my FB account because of all the things im unhappy with.

As this thread has been de-railed a bit (the only relation SOPA/PIPA has to this article is it proves neither is needed to take down offending pirating sites)

Here is some info

An indictment unsealed today by the Department of Justice claims that MegaUpload has caused the entertainment industries more than $500 million in lost revenue and generated $175 million “in criminal proceeds.”

Two corporations – Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited – were indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on January 5th, 2012, and charged with “engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement.”

In a 72-page indictment unsealed in a Virginia federal court, prosecutors charged that the site earned more than $175 million since its founding in 2005, most of it based on copyright infringement.

As for the site's employees, they were paid lavishly and they spent lavishly. Even the graphic designer, 35-year-old Slovakian resident Julius Bencko, made more than $1 million in 2010 alone.

The indictment goes after six individuals, who between them owned 14 Mercedes-Benz automobiles with license plates such as "POLICE," "MAFIA," "V," "STONED," "CEO," "HACKER," GOOD," "EVIL," and—perhaps presciently—"GUILTY." The group also had a 2010 Maserati, a 2008 Rolls-Royce, and a 1989 Lamborghini. They had not one but three Samsung 83" TVs, and two Sharp 108" TVs. Someone owned a "Predator statue." Motor bikes, jet skis, artwork, and even 60 Dell servers could all be forfeit to the government if it can prove its case against the members of the "Mega Conspiracy."

The case is a major one, involving international cooperation between the US, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Canada, and the Philippines. In addition to the arrests, 20 search warrants were executed today in multiple countries.

Megaupload employees apparently knew how the site was being used. When making payments through its “uploader rewards” program, employees sometimes looked through the material in those accounts first. "10+ Full popular DVD rips (split files), a few small porn movies, some software with keygenerators (warez)," said one of these notes. (The DMCA does not provide a "safe harbor" to sites who have actual knowledge of infringing material and do nothing about it.)

In a 2008 chat, one employee noted that "we have a funny business... modern days [sic] pirates
smile.gif
," to which the reply was, "we're not pirates, we're just providing shipping servies [sic] to pirates
smile.gif
."

Employees send each other e-mails saying things like, “can u pls get me some links to the series called ‘Seinfeld’ from MU [Megaupload]," since some employees did have access to a private internal search engine.

Employees even allegedly uploaded content themselves, such as a BBC Earth episode uploaded in 2008.

I don't think our freedom is in danger following/regarding this article.

They have broken various laws and openly boasted about it as well as profiting hugely from piracy.
