Hi all,

Got a Laptop with Vista 64 bit OS.

Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 @2.1GHz (2cpus)

3 gig ram

dell inspiron (Model 1545)

Recently something happened to it and i don't know what, but all but a few of the programs on it have disappeared, the search function on the start button page has got an error no matter what you type, the recycle bin has disappeared from the desktop, within the control panel only a few settings are left.

Date and time, dell wireless (doesnt work) game controllers, idt audio, indexing options, intel (R) gma driver, internet options, keyboard and mouse settings, pen and input dev's, people near me, phone and modem, printers, regional language, security centre, sounds, tablet pc, and text to speech.

All other settings within control panel are gone, so i can't remove anything or add anything.

The accessibility is extremely limited and it is becoming a pain.

I have scanned the laptop with a thorough scan using Avast pro, it yielded nothing but some programs which it couldn't scan Delldoc files, I don't know what these are and whether theyre needed, there was only 5 of them, and one nero file called root1, which is apparently a compression bomb (whatever that is).

I have tried to get to system restore to try to roll back to a time when it was ok, but there is no way i can see to even get to system restore seeing as there is no search capability and the run feature ctrl + R seems to not do it's job properly either.

Any help with any of these problems would be a massive help

Thank you.

PS: If there is anything you need to know then please don't hesitate to ask, and if anyone knows how to get to system restore then that would be also great too.

All sorted

Hi all,

Sorry it was a short problem lol, all sorted now.

I went online and spotted a solution which worked, Typed in C:\Windows\System32\rstui.exe

And then it allowed me to access the system restore utility.

Bad problem and very worrying seeing as i don't have a clue what happened.

Hope this can help someone else if it happens to them.

Cheers.

Sounds like a virus problem, though had an issue similar to this on Windows 7 this year where Bullguard/Bitdefender decided to flag almost all the system files as infected and promptly quarantine, and sometimes delete them, resulting in a totally hosed OS install. Had to copy about 4-5 back using notepad open menu in the system recovery partition/console from a disk, then boot and restore as many as possible after a system restore. PITA, but was fixed within an hour by the AV company.
