a low down (might be a bit long..)

i have 2 PC's, one downstairs for family and my one in my room. i managed to 'stupidly' get a virus on my pc which wouldnt allow me to re-install windows (i have a thread about it on here somewhere) so i went out to get a new internal HD :)

basically, i tried to install windows from disk from startup (replaced my maxtor with the new samsung) of which it wouldnt boot and gave me a nvidia boot agent error (more on that later) so i went down to my family pc and found 2 SATA connections on the mobo which i was supprised about (a good few years old, but was good back in the day) so i plugged my samsung in and the pc booted fine onto the family hd and windows pickedup the samsung just fine :).. i then installed windows etc and got it working. then tried it on my pc... still not working! then i thought it might just be the mobo n hd not liking each other so i took the maxtor (one that boots but has a virus) downstairs, re-formatted, re-installed windows, done. tried it upstairs and boom.. nothing. keep getting error messages:

nvidia boot agent 242.0535

copyright (C) 2001-2005 nvidia corporation

copyright (C) 1997-2000 intel corporation (however my mobo is geforce and cpu is amd ??)

PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: exiting nvidia boot agent

it then just keeps going through and through that and asking for a boot cd.

tried the mobo driver cd.. no luck, tried the xp cd.. no luck.

none of my hd boot on my pc now :(

fiddled with bios, bios can find and recognises the hd's, checked cables, checked xp cd works etc etc .. everything is fine! also tried multiple 'startup routines' none have worked.

thing is also... the maxtor and the samsung wont single boot on my family pc either! although they do work if i have the family hd in and my other hd as a salve, which windows picks up fine.

am i missing something on the hard drive that 'ment' to be there for boot-up? the maxtor worked before (came blank and i installed xp onto it from bios) but now it doesnt

oh and my pc is nvidia/amd, my downstairs is intel/ati so maybe i have some sort of intel/ati drivers on my new hd? although they dont work alone on my family pc anyway so this might not be the problem

any thoughts?

Firstly, installing windows on one pc and then moving the hard drive will not work. The HAL (google it) goes all wappy! :p

In your BIOS have you set the boot order to boot from the hard drive? change it to first.

the only way i can install windows is from my other pc .. my pc wont let me

yep ive tried setting the cd first then the hd, tried setting the hd first then cd .. tried to manually boot from hd or cd (f11 for me)

if i disable the 'boot from network' or 'boot from other devices' then it doesnt come up with the error message, just to put in a boot cd and press enter (still wont work..)

Perhaps a new hard drive and clean install?

Do you know what virus you are infected with? If so then try google to see what is recommended for ridding yourself of it.

I've heard (never experienced it myself) of virii staying on the disk after a format. Try doing something a little more drastic (think magnet + hard disk). Might want to get some more advice first as I'm not entirely sure if that will screw up the disc.

well both the HD are now formatted and both show no virus's (if loaded with my family pc and then checking from 'my computer') so i dont think thats the problem. just annoying that the bios 'wont' boot the windows **** at all :( .. just keeps giving me the nvidia boot disk error

if there were a virus on his hard drive stopping him from installing, surely it wouldnt of let him install xp on the pc downstairs?

well.. got it sorted xD

its really wierd, my XP disk works fine on any/all computer from boot up apart from mine! i downloaded the new Windows 7 (very good btw) and it booted right away xS .. my pc must not like the xp cd anymore hah...

small problem now though with cod4 and cod5 ..

cod4: single player works, multiplayer does not, it just comes up with a blank screen, windows recognises it crashes straight away.

cod5: loads fine into single and multi, however it wont find any servers

maybe these are driver issues? however, windows 7 is still running off the vista coding so it should be alright (im using vista drivers)

Just installed vista over xp and had same issues with cod4, try downloading ALL of the patches (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.4-5, 1.6 and 1.7) and install them from 1.1 onwards. hope this helps. Don't know about cod5 tho.

For the CoD4 problem, you need to turn stereo mix on.

For this, go to the Vista/7 Games Explorer, click on tools at the top, then audio devices, recording tab and turn on stereo mix.

For the CoD5 problem, try adding it onto your firewall "safe list". If you have a separate firewall. Make sure you have all patches. etc. etc.
