Introduction:

Over the last couple of years, Cyborg have been releasing some very awesome products for gamers. After the massive succes of the R.A.T. series, they finally made a mouse for m.m.o. players. This model is priced at 100 pounds, between the R.A.T. 7 and the wireless version. I was one of the first to buy it and got it at €105. Since ordering it, the price here in Belgium is already up to €115, so it's not something for gamers on a budget.

"Leveraging the award winning Cyborg R.A.T. design, the new M.M.O.7 expands the Cyborg gaming mouse portfolio to meet the needs of the MMO gamer." said Darren Richardson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. "The M.M.O.7 is part of the our long term strategy to build products for passionate consumers."

The Cyborg M.M.O.7 is compatible with Mac OS X version 10.6.6 or later, as well as Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

I do not play any mmo or rpg. The reason I bought this mouse is the huge adjustability and the wide arrange of buttons as I'm not much of a keyboard fan.

First look:

Since pictures say more than a thousand words, here's the box and it's contents.

Let's start with the front:

And the other side:

DSC_0009.jpg

This is not your average box, it doesn't even look like a box. On the front there is a magnetic door which protects the window.

If you are a sucker for packaging, you probably just bought one.

At this point we find 3 seals which is great, as Rodney Reynolds would say: "Because....you....know....it's never been....opened....before"

After cutting the seals, I tried opening the box which is rather a hard thing to do as there is not much room to put your finger.

Anyway, here is the right door opened:

The mouse and cable are in a separate plastic cover and are held in place by those twisty metal things:

As customizability is one of the key features of this mouse, here are some accessory shots:

DSC_0014.jpg

All these lovely goods come in a nice box made out of soft-touch plastic:

Inside, everything is protected by high quality foam:

Ofcourse some more pictures of the replaceable parts:

That's it for the box and its contents, lets go into detail on the mouse itself.

Main review:

Let's start this review with some chit chat about the cable. It's huge! As it should be on a high-end product, the USB 2.0 connector is gold-plated to prevent bad contacts or corrosion. It also has a very high quality cloth braid on it, no possible way to see trough, even when stretched.

DSC_0021.jpg

The cable doesn't come out of the mouse in the center but below the left mouse button.

All the structural parts are made of anodized aluminium which gives it a very high quality feel. Because it's not shaped like any other mouse, all the adjustable components are visible making this thing look über-pro. The parts which your palm touches are made out of a high quality plastic. Some of the buttons require slightly too much force to be pressed though. They also move around a tiny little bit, but not enough for it to be a problem.

DSC_0024.jpg

When you first use the mouse, all the weights are already inserted. In order to get them out, you need to undo the screw in the back which is also a tool. Behind the tool is another ring you need to unscrew, the ring holds a spring that makes sure the weights don't move, no matter how many or few you use. In this review, I'll use all of them.

DSC_0027.jpg

The tool features a small hexagon head which is used to adjust how far you want the thumb buttons to be. On the right side you can use it to change the pinky rest. In this review I use the biggest one so my hand no longer touches my desk. This pinky rest is actually pretty important to me as I always have a sore pinky after a few hours of gaming. However, it's not as good as it could be because for me it's not ergonomical enough. That's the first not perfect thing though.

DSC_0025.jpg

No matter what size your hand is, this mouse will probably suit it rather well, there is a high grip rubber palm and pinky rest and also a raised palm rest included for those who have a more curved hand.

The reason Cyborg calls this the M.M.O. mouse is because it has so many buttons and modes, but the mouse being packed with buttons sadly also means you can't lift it up with one hand without pressing something. So you'll need a lot of space to put your mouse unless you know how to deal with the sensitivity of 6400 dpi. I lose accuracy when going above 4000. Luckily there is a button to cycle between the dpi settings, you can set these in the software with 25 dpi intervals. X and Y axis can be adjusted seperately, but I don't see the point in that to be honest.

DSC_0026.jpg

At this moment, I wish I never started the review because if I talk about all the options, you won't make it all the way trough, neither will I. To cut things short, in the software, you can adjust everything. This ranges from dpi setting to (macro) key-bindings and even what color you want the lights to be. You can choose these colors using the swatch or by RGB:

It's also a good thing this software is available for mac and windows and even has multiple languages to choose from, except Dutch ofcourse....

languages.jpg

There are some unprogrammable buttons (precision aim, pinky button, the dpi button and the 2 action lock buttons (read spray away buttons)). All the others can be programmed as a single button or as a giant macro. This is great for mmo players, I just use one for my email adress and the other one for my password

.

Programming a button is very easy, you just click it in the software, select what you want, type in what it has to do and then you give it a name.

You can also do it the lazy/smart way and just download a profile pack from the cyborg website.

Now I bought this mouse to game with, not just to do a review so here's what I think of it when gaming.

I started with playing Crysis 2. All the buttons make it very easy to use the suit modes. But perhaps the best part is the thumb joystick. This can be used to open your suit settings and adjust the nano suit while keeping the scroll-click free for melee attacks. In game u can set the dpi to 6400 and use the mouse sensitivity bar to lower it again whilst keeping the incredible accuracy.

Moving on to Battlefield 3, I have to say it's ,again very awesome. I could even fly a jet plane using nothing but my mouse. That's of course very good when you need a drink, other than that, no real use though. All the buttons make it very easy to switch weapons and gadgets while still running around like a fool.

Conclusion:

The M.M.O. 7 is a brilliant mouse, for most people and games it's a complete overkill. A bit like playing counterstrike on a 7970. But the bragging rights are massive
tongue.png
. Sadly, so is the pricetag. At £100 it really is one of the most expensive mice out there, for most the price can't be justified by all the buttons and customisations. However, for those who doubt buying this, I would very much advise u to do so. It takes some time getting used to it and you really don't need those 15 buttons, but just look at it, it's gorgeous. It's also very comfortable.

If I were one of the official reviewers here on OC3D, I'd give it a gold award.

Here's a quick sum up for those who didn't read all the way trough:

Nice review buddy. I'm not a big fan of all those buttons, but then again I'm not the target audience this mouse is aimed at. However, it does look like a very high quality piece of kit and as you said the price is a bit of a let down.

P.S. Why do you have your password mapped to one of the buttons. Isn't that a serious security risk?

Nice read, mouse and keyboard is next on my shopping list.. Will definitely be considering this one

it is, I'm just lazy and no-one ever uses this pc but me anyway

Omnomnomnom, orange and black, may have to grab one of these to match my upcoming build even tho the £100 price tag is very heavy.. it can allways come last tho i guess as all i need to buy now is the WC.

Ive heard good things about the R.A.T and this looks to be basicaly the same?

Probably would never use the side buttons other than MAYBE as a mute/unmute mic button like i use my current side buttons for.

Nice review anyways.

Very nice review. The mmo ver. is nice and all but i like my plain rat 7 better

Less unneeded buttons and imo looks better just black and silver

I just signed up on this forum to add a few things that may be of interest. I have had this mouse for about a month and it is simply nothing short of phenominal. I'm a musician, gamer, retired military all around tech junky. I use this mouse to:

Surf the web

Run Cubase and Pro Tools

Run the entire gambit of Adobe C5 software

Enter logins and Passwords

Email

World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, Tera, Witcher, etc. (I'll just stop on game titles now as this list will be about 30 or so items)

The entire Microsoft Office Suite

Ventrilo and Mumble

...just to name a few haha!!

I have dropped this mouse from the couch and my desk and nothing has broke or scratched or showed any signs of abuse. I have tried just about every surface imaginable and only a mirror was able to confuse the laser optics on this mouse. I have never had any tracking issues like I did with the RAT 7 (though I didn't find the RAT 7 as problematic as the Razer enthusiasts would have you believe) and none of the buttons have felt like they got looser with the time I have had to abuse them.

The only cons I could possible find on this mouse is a user build problem. What I mean by that is, different hands and grip styles. I could embed a pic of how I hold the mouse and with that showing my hand size. I have no problems hitting any of the buttons and they all seem to work without any pressure problems or difficulty for me. The two action lock buttons are the most complained about on most of the reviews that I have read on this mouse and I just don't find a problem with them personally. The mode shift button on the far left side above the LMB is also subject of some grudge from other users. On the RAT 7 I thought it was rather hard to depress but I finally figured something out. The idea on both the RAT and MMO is not to press it by the way it logically sits on the anglular lip that holds it. The best way to hit this button is to lift your index finger and push it straight down from the very top. Once I figured this out, both the RAT 7 and the MMO 7 became a breeze.

To give an idea of how one could program this mouse for all the buttons is best said, "Use your imagination and intuitivenes!" For instance, On Cubase (music editing software for those not familiar) Mode 1 is set to perform all my recording and flip through tracks and such - Mode Shift 1 is all the effects that I can add and adjust. Mode 2 is the Mixer and Mode Shift 2 is effects on the mixer. Mode 3 is MIDI and Mode Shift 3 is just a cycle through all the menus. Bottom line: All these buttons have put a huge smile on my face and increased my workflow tremendously - to which I might add, has made my gaming feel like a luxury and not a chore.

Seriously, this is not a mouse! This is the furthest object from a mouse in the world of computer peripherals. What the MMO7 really is - A tool to enhance any computer scenario and just happens to cover the mouse particulars in it's design!!! Like a good TV remote, the MMO7 is showing a progression. Old TV remotes would only power on and off your TV and change channels. Now they can control audio, video, recording, editing etc. The MMO7 is showing the same functionality and with comfort (at least for my hands). So, if you are looking for a tool to enhance your best computing practices then the price really isn't an issue considering the big picture of this device. I completely understand that everyone is different and has different styles and needs. Again, this is my take on this mouse and I hope some of the many uses that I briefly scratched serve to give some thought on the direction this mouse has given the present market.

Edit: I just saw the comment on having the password mapped to one of the buttons. Sure it's a risk but I too am also lazy and sick of typing in my logins and pw's for all the crap I'm signed up for. I guess if I leave home with my comp I could just delete that macro

nice review, it has me interested now. i actually like the colours of it. a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Thanks heaps.

Ive had a R.A.T 7 for a few weeks now and i have to say its by far the best, most ergonomic mouse i have ever had the pleasure to use.

Very happy indeed
biggrin.png

I have the plain r.a.t 7 mouse and is the best mouse i have ever had. Nice and adjusted to fit my had perfectly.

Nice review BTW, the r.a.t 7 MMO is nice but i never play MMO's so i will stick with the plain one.

I owe RAT5 for couple of months now. My only complain is that I find clicking to be a bit hard. Many times I simply miss double-click. Other than that it's great. Even tho it looks like something that will break your hand, it actually feels very good.

Good review.
A the moment I'm using Rat7 contagion and I have to say that I'm not 100% happy with this mouse. Mouse wheel just fells cheap and bad(its moving from one side to another), also if you want to adjust the palm rest part its stable only on position 1, if you move it to the back it start to wobbling from side to side and becoming uncomfortable when you moving mouse little faster. Overall quality is not that bad, but I was expecting something more.

Well, I regret my puchase. After maybe 4 or 5 months my middle mouse button is failing. It's registering multiple clicks - I press the button once (99% of the time to open new tabs while browsing) and it usually opens 3 or 2.

Testing profile with included software shows this nicely. Should've stick with Logitech like I did so many years...

Gonna try to take it back and change it for Logitech mouse.
