Looking to upgrade

My rig was originally built in late 2009, what remains from the original build is the mobo, cpu, psu and the original 2gb of ram. Everything else was added or swapped later. Due to some psu issues lately when it was left unplugged for 10 days, I'm looking into changing it and possibly upgrade some other parts as well.

I don't have a certain budget, but I would like to spend as little as possible, but I am willing to spend more on a decent product.

For the psu I have a couple options. Either get a cheaper new one or a better used one. For example I could get a few month old corsair ax750/760 or ax850 for around 80 quid, which still has most of the 7 year warranty. An rm750 for around 70 quid, but it only has a 5 year warranty. I would prefer a fully modular unit for convenience.

For the mobo I was looking into swapping my m4a79xtd evo for a m5a99x evo, which would allow me to have 8gb of ram per slot opposed to 4gb on the m4, faster usb and sata and the possibility to upgrade to an fx processor in the future, but for now my phenom is more than enough for what I do. Also looking into used motherboard, but not sure if it's a good idea to buy used when it comes to motherboards.

The Radeon 5970 I currently have is getting a bit slow, you can especially feel the video ram capping. Tempted to get an r9 290, but 300 quid is on the high end of my budget, but I would buy it if it would last.

I would keep the cpu, ssd and hdd and they perform fine for my needs for now. As far as ram goes, the 6gb I have currently cap during longer gaming sessions, so depending whether I swap my mobo or not, I would get 4x4gb or 2x8gb, 2x8 being a lot cheaper, or keep in on the cheap side and get one 4gb and one 2gb stick to have 12gb.

Looking for a new case as well, because my Aerocool Templarius Telum is feeling a bit cramped, possibly getting a used case as well, something like a corsair c70 or 600t.

All input welcome.

Its hard to give you advise not knowing how much you want to spend.

IMO changing MOBO (and staying with AMD) is a waiste of money, go with i5, 290 is a good choice. But still, how much you can spend?

Call me a fanboy, but I prefer AMD. Intel is like an M series BMW to me, it's good, but I just plain don't like it. And I'm keeping my current cpu as it's good enough for me.

As for my budget, I have way more than I need, but want to keep it down as much as I can, hence why I'm looking into used parts. I would say I'm looking at around 220 quid for the mobo, psu and ram.

Don't get a 290 as that will be let down by that cpu imo. Get a 280x at most. You'll also probably want to get a rm650 at most as a 750 is overkill.

That's why I said I might upgrade my mobo so I can upgrade to an fx later. As for the psu, a new rm650 or a few month old ax760 which is more efficient and has more warranty?

RM650 will be quieter and which FX were you thinking of getting?

Upgrade the mobo to the one you mentioned, for the ram go for the 2x8GB over 4x4GB kit. Just leaves more headroom in the future. Then the psu always get a new one unless you know how a used one was treated. Don't really want to skimp on a PSU since it can take a whole system out in a blink of an eye. If you end up wanting the R9 290 then i would opt for a 700w+ unit or for a 280x i would opt for a 600w+ unit. SeasonicX series are very good. They actually make a lot of other companies PSUs(including some of corsairs)

If you want high clocking AMD 8cores you might have to be brave and take a look at the 9xxx series :I. The 8350 isn't quite the killer overclocker it used to be thanks to the 9370/9590.

I'd like to get one of those, but the price and 220W TDP is a bit much for me. I think I'll stick to my Phenom for now, unless I find a bargain 8350.
