Very few of the AAA titles run natively on Linux. You'll be resolved to messing with Wine to get them up and running, although Wine has come a long way in recent times.

As for Call of Duty 4, these guys are saying it's pretty functional.

Time to update this thread:

I was rocking through Half-Life 2 on Debian the other day. It's pretty damn cool to finally have Portal (I don't see the 2nd one yet), Left 4 Dead, and all the Half-Lifes on Linux now.

My old laptop is really beginning to show its age now (GPU is an Nvidia 8600M GT), I've really got to gift the rig in my signature to a Linux install. I'm tempted to go with Debian, but I might just go with an extremely cut down version of Ubuntu for Valve's official support.
