Linux + Steam

Am I a lone wolf on this atm?

I installed Ubuntu onto my partitioned mechanical, Running Catalyst 13.3 Trine 2 and Team Fortress 2. They run we'll just wish there was some kind of FRAPS software so I can do benchmark comparisons.

Boy oh boy has Wine made some massive improvements over the years

I can run all Unreal Engine games with it quite we'll. There are a few micro stutters although it seems more driver related then wine related. If I had the same 3rd party windows apps like Radeon Pro/Fraps I'd be grooving on Linux like all day pretty much

Once I get my new rig up and running I might dual boot Ubuntu with my Arch
and join you in this adventure :)

True. I did a few experiments about a year ago (last time before that was
somewhere in 2007) and time has definitely not stood still.

Great to know, encouraging for future experiments :)

Bit late to the party. :p

I have it up and running on Debian 7 (Wheezy). I had to remove some dependencies and re-build the Steam deb to get it to actually install, but so far it works pretty well.

TBH as soon as more mainstream titles hit it I'll be on it as fast as I can. Gaming is literally the only thing I use windows for!

I think that Steambox will have a massive effect on porting things over to linux and I can't wait for it to happen!

I love OS X. Everything just works and works well.
What do you not like about it?

The only thing i would change is the support for gaming, but that's already happening... Slowly but surely.

The operating system itself I actually find quite interesting and not bad from a technical point of
view. My problem is with Apple as a company and their horrible behavior towards pretty much
anyone that's not one of their top execs.

Quite a few of my college buddies have Mac Books, and yes, I have to admit that the hardware
as well as the software are quite nice, sometimes even very nice. I don't belong to those people
who laugh at the ones using Mac products or claim them to be dumb (in fact, quite a few of my
Mac book buddies are most likely smarter than I am).

But to me, a company's moral compass and their behavior with regards to ethics is important,
and Apple just loses so bloody big time in that area it's not even remotely funny. :(

I'll refrain from starting to post examples, as that is quite off topic and would probably just
result in a flame war. I'm pretty sure everyone around here can use Google and the likes and
can find out for themselves what I might be talking about.

As a side note: Just because I think Apple has horrible ethics does not mean I have nothing to
criticize about its competitors, but that does not make Apple any better nor is it a valid excuse
for their behavior.

My a10 4600m feels a lot cooler then the macbook pro 13' 2011 sandy bridge model I use to have. Also performs better for half the price...

^So?
I know someone with a Peugeot 106 that can keep up with a Ferrari 458 all day long...
The Ferrari is like like a bajillion times more expensive.

I'm not sure what your point is there.

That must be one heck of a 106. Certainly heavily modified from the stock model!

I could never understand the premium that Apple charge for a Mac. But then again, good luck to them, if people are silly enough to shell out for it, why wouldn't they charge the price they do? :p

If you think that you shouldn't be buying Intel CPUs. You should be switching out those dual Xeons for 16-core Opterons. :p

Thanks for the link, I had no idea when L4D was coming to Linux.

On topic: I just found out you get Steam keys for the Humble Indie bundles. They launch no problem through Steam in Debian. Looks like I'll be putting Debian back on my main rig again. Anyone know what the Catalyst drivers are like for Linux these days? I haven't used them since I had the HD4870.

I cannot promise I wouldn't do the same thing to be honest. If people pay me outrageous
prices for my product I see little reason to sell it to them for cheaps. Except moral scruples,
maybe. Dammit!

Oh yes, Intel have less than stellar record when it comes to unscrupulous shenanigans,
I'm well aware of that. :(

But from what I can tell, they are no longer as bad as they used to be, and even at their
worst, I don't think they even came close to Apple (yes, I'm aware: bribes, coercion etc.,
but Apple just makes my skin crawl, which Intel has not yet managed to accomplish for
some reason).

Maybe they have just not needed to resort to such dealings since AMD have been posing
not as much of a threat in the past few years, or maybe they just have gotten better at
not being caught, who knows.

Long ramble short: Yes, you are right, this is somewhat hypocritical of me, and I'm not
really adhering to my own standards to the fullest. Only somewhat.

Good to know :)

Haven't had Radeon in ages though, sorry.
