LINK: Gigabyte i-RAM

Nice idea, but it does have some major downfalls, and i must say that the benchmarks arn't really that great. A pair of raided raptors wouldn't be far short of the speed of this device.

I would imagine that the problem is mainly down to the limitation of the SATA bus - shame they couldnt have rigged it up another way.

also i think two raptors will cost nearly same price and wont have only 4gb only but you ll have much more

Yeah exactly.

I cant remember the pci bus specs off-hand but i wonder if there would have been a substantial performance increase in using the card through the pci bus, and letting windows detect it as a pci-ide/raid controller or something.

I like the plusses of this device and hate the downs... So i'm pretty torn on the whole idea.

I like the small increase in speed and the ability to use whatever kind of ram on it that you want, whether it be new or old as long as it's ddr. I hate the fact it uses ram at the same becuase if the battery dies (ie ur out of town and u blow a circuit breaker) and u have chosen to load an OS on ur drive, say bye-bye :wavey: .

I dunno, i like it, and hate it... I think i hate it more than like it :)

but fragtek when your pc is in standby mode (i.e. turned off but still pluged in) the I-RAM uses the stanbby power and also during the pc is on i think the battrey is rechaged everytime ;)

Yes, that's true... But if you read my post I stated if you pop a circuit while your out of town, that means no power will be getting to your computer no matter what.

That = teh gayness.

I do not like the idea at all unless you have some 1337 standby UPS going there for the backup. I don't think I will be going near this :(
