LG announce their 34UC89G-B Ultra wide G-Sync display

Why 1080 resolution?...

Because it is cheap. It literally all comes down to the height of the plastic. That is why we never went to 1200H on LCD monitors. Well, we did, but 1080p was the most popular (and cheapest) option.

Yeah, I can understand that point. But 1080p on an 34" ultrawide though? That will just look so weird and silly.

Yeah probably. 1080p has always been absolutely useless to me. Before TFT I had a 20" monitor made by Philips. CRT thing like. It was 1600x1200, so all of the emulator front ends I made (500 or more !) were made on that.

I bought a 1080p 24" monitor (still got it as it goes) and when I tried to use my layouts (the front ends I had coded) none of them fit the screen. The software did not scale, so I could not access the button panels to make them work lol. Yeah, I was super peeved at that !

It was only when I went to 4k about two years ago that I could actually sodding see all of them ! 1440p is fine too of course.

But yeah, we went from massive resolutions to some odd resolution with bugger all height. I spoke to my mate who is an engineer about it and he said when they cut the screens 1080p leaves more material aferwards off of a sheet to make more with out of the same batch. It's kinda like silicon wafers really, the smaller they are the more you get out of a wafer.

Don't forget about couch gamers who play from a distance

Which I believe is a very small minority in the overall majority of gamers. Since I believe that most gamers sit at your desk, infront of your monitor gaming.

Depends on the game. 144hz means lower res. There are similar displays from BenQ. They're the same height as a 27" so yeah pixel density is not as great but it's all a compromise.

For racing this would be great. Especially mounted in front of a cockpit. If you want 1440p then you can only go 100hz currently (and probably add some dollars to the price as well)

Samsung make 32" 1080 displays so there's clearly a market for large fuzzy panels.

I'd agree 1440 is the sweet spot.
