Leaked 6970 results

Leaked AMD Radeon 6970 results have surfaced, in a nut shell it seems the 6970 (as it stands now in early days yet, without proper drivers and a proper release) that it will be at least 10% faster than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX480.

What's being said, is the HD 6970 is scoring X12000 in 3D Mark Vantage, with a P score of P24499.

Unigine Heaven results (1920 x 1200, 4xAA, 16xAF) giving a result of 36.6 fps.

Comparatively

- a HD5870 scores P19337 in 3D Mark Vantage, and 17.3 fps in Heaven

- a GTX480 scores P21106 in 3D Mark Vantage, and 29.5 fps in Heaven

Core speeds seem to be at around 800 - 900MHz, 6 + 8pin power requirements and an estimated TDP of 255W or more.

Yeah it is a single gpu. Think of it as the replacement of the 5850 and the 5870. 6970 is the 5870 but new generation.

Yeah a 6870 replaces the 5850 thats for a fact. However a 5850 and 5870 were two powerful cards before the 6870 arrived. Now amd has to release a high end card with a new name to differentiate the two cards in performance. The 6950 and the 6970 will be two powerful cards. The dual card will be called 6990.

Thing is.

When the 480 released it was ripped because it was only 10% faster than the 5870 and was bloody hot and guzzled down power. Now the 6970 is only 10% faster than the 480. So they expect people to ditch their 5870 and go and buy something for lots of coin that's only at best 20% faster than what they have? like that 20% will make any bloody difference?

If they were setting out to behead Nvidia in the performance stakes then this is not the way to do it. There needs to be a clear difference, not an insignificant one.

Also.

With the 480 having dropped through the floor with pricing now it could work out better to get one and slap a Arctic triple on it (if Arctic weren't absolute idiots... Will talk about that in a sec). You'd then have something cheaper and as cool..

Yeah, Arctic.

FFS. So I was looking at the triple for the 470/480 the other day. £50 odd. So I looked at the fine print on Scan (not that I would buy from those irriuts) and it said -

"Due to the degradation of certain parts this cooler does not come with a retention plate or memory heatsinks.. You will need to buy those here (and it links you to Arctic)"

However, upon going to Arctic and searching for this mythical kit I could not find it. I also realised that they are in the USA. So wait...

Arctic want you to hand over £50 odd for a brick that you can't use and then take a risk on getting the rest of the parts you need to use the effing thing?

Turn it in will you. That put me right off.

If this cards going to be long time gaming cards prepare to fork out money from your wallet for electric bill and also this card is bloody hot why put it in your case when you can get a card the uses less power for same performance. I want to get a 470 but the heat i cannot deal with and the power draw. I have no choice to go amd. I dont like radeon cards i never used to.

If I was in the market for a top end card and the cash to spend on it it would be a 5970 all the way. The problem is I am in love with Physx. I have three titles that use it and they're among my faves (Batman AA, Mirror's Edge and Mafia 2).

I am running Crossfire 5770 which consume more power than a 470. If I want Physx to actually work I need to put in an 8800 Ultra which does almost the same draw as a 470. Also, because I have to have a sandwich (ATI as the bread and Nvidia as the filling) my temps rocket. Bottom card idles around 40 tops out around 68. Middle card sits between 64 and 75c for Physx alone and the top card does about the same.

For me @ £173 delivered the 470 is a godsend tbh. Cooler quieter and less power draw than what I'm using now.

*stares across the desk at a 480 still idling @ 42 and 72 under load, oc'd to only 850 under air*

Engineers from all sides are honestly giggling at how much nVidia are/were slated over the last few years concerning many of the things AMD are also doing (cos they make business sense at the end of the day) (and have been doing, but you'd not know about it). Little is being said about some of the rebadging, and some of the things you won't ever be aware of but for a few simple bios renames.

Some of the fore-thought about the coming cards is a bit inaccurate. A plus point from AMD with the cooling methods I have to say, and pcb design. Whether they stick with them tho I'm not sure.

Hoping the reviewers spot and take note of the things missed previously, this time around. Concentrate more on the tech, and less on the 1upsmanship for the sake of it.

I think Nvidia did a lot of it to themselves tbh. They have behaved like a law unto themselves.

Mind you now AMD are doing the same thing. Ugh.

Physix is good but not every game has it. Right now most games will not come with it. The reason for that is most of the games we play are console based and thats x9 not x11. When the new console comes around we will see more and more of this features added in game. Developers will implement it to present their arsenal of games being develop.

physx will die off

Many console games merely just don't boast it as it's not something a purely console gamer would be interested in knowing. As long as the likes of the xbox are popular, physx will continue to play a part in that dev. There are so many games out there using it that you'd not appreciate.

I'd prefer to see some kind of open-fx system come into play, so it'd matter little if you had cuda/fusion/stream/fermi/cpu, it'd just do it - but that's not gonna happen. nVidia are in bed with the game devs more and more, and the more likely thing to happen is that physx gets swallowed into drivers so much that you have no on/off for them, they're just done as granted. They'll use it as a tool for leverage.

Apparently the coolers we've seen here are just bolt-on stock things that won't be on the retail version, which I hate to say may not surface that quickly.

physx will die off

When? because it's been around for about four years now and the odd title comes out to keep it alive.

BTW need to clarify a bit. There aren't many titles that use it but I like the ones that do.

I also play my games a lot due to paying for all of them (not saying you don't of course) and if I like a game I will play through it many times. I've already completely New Vegas and went straight into playthrough 2.

I play a lot of Mirror's Edge as it's a skill based game based on times. So I don't see myself getting bored with that.

What I am saying is this : I use Physx with games I already own. I don't really care what happens to it in the future I want it now

If this is as hot as a 480, I do hope they get as much grief as Nvidia did.

What do 2 x 460's compare to those figures in the first post??

Only reason I ask is that this new card is likely to be quite a bit more expensive than 2 x 460's
