Laptop screen inputs

Hi all,

I do seem to be asking lots of questions recently, thanks for all the hints and tips so far :)

I have been handed a laptop to decommission at work.

I have been told it does not boot, motherboard failure..........

I have taken it apart and given me some ideas.

The screen was in full working order and i was wondering how i could put an input to it to use as say a rather large photoframe or as a screen modded into the side of my pc case.

I am unfamiliar with the plug types of laptop screen though it does look very similar to that of a slim line laptop cd/dvd drive.

The exact model number is:

lp150x2 (a2) 15.0'' XGA (m7)

This after a quick google comes out to be a 15" XGA 1024x768 (Matte) screen.

So are my ideas possible?

those require the laptop be working, they are mainly just repackaging the laptop.

i just have a screen and a dream...........

I have just thought of another option.

I also have a G3 ibook i was going to sell for spares and repairs. It'll get me £100 but do you reckon that i could do something with that.

Laptop screens are extremely difficult to get working without certain parts of the motherboard/gpu etc. Its near impossible to find any documentation on the screen connections and where inverters are concerned things can get a bit dangerous.

I have the graphics card too, a mighty mobility radeon 7500 :-)

Though then i have a new issue, i do not know for sure that the graphics card works or then how to power it !

You cannot make a lap top screen just work on a pc. they use Encoders that are built into the lap top mother board and if you whant a encoder your going to pay upwards and onwards of £180 (that the cheapest) how ever with a little bit of skill and some eprom knowledge and programming you can make your own for about £50.

The problem you then have to solve is mirco modding on the panel it self as you will need to be able to adjust some of the smd's on the lap top its self and all so you have the ribbon cable to deal with.

Once you have that all sorted you then need to find the frequency the panel runs at and all so the sync modes ....

good luck

I tried it once and failed big time ... I ended up flea baying it.

im not saying you'll not be able to do it but its very few and far between people that can and normally there pros who you have to pay a small fortune to.

All so don't forget lap top monitors run digital to digital were as ALL pc monitors are analogue. they convert the digital signal down to analogue then send that signal through the cable to a receiver that then converts it back to a digital. there is no real such thing as a Real digital cable for a external monitor they all go analogue some were along the line and that all ways turns out to be the cable between the pc and screen it self.

Woah! Mayhem you are on the ball today! Very impressive.

After fixing a few laptops I am too interested in converting a panel to desktop.

I shall be keeping any eye on this thread for updates on if it can be easily achieved. :)

Dont get to excited at £150 a pop there not cheap ...

Can i suggest you stop and just get a pre built tft as there only from £50 to £100 this is far cheaper than a conversion.

and if you look on flea bay you can pick up a broke one with a bugged inverter for £10 and the inverter is easy to replace and costs about £8 to £15 at the most.

this would be far the best and easiest way of doing a mod like this esp when cost can go spiralling out of all proportions.

LOL

I was after a quick mod that would cost very little.

I have to agree that upon a tad more research this is looking unobtainable on my budget.

So if anyone needs an XGA laptop screen give me a shout if not it'll be visiting an auction site.

What size screen you after for your project out of interest. still a 15"

Btw its a very common misconception for people to think they can fling a laptop screen into a PC. If i had a penny for every modder thought of the idea id be rich. ;) The biggest problem is people are mislead by other's to think it is economically viable to do when in fact it is not..

All so before posting it on a auction site please do a little research into it. It will help sell it.. Other wise it will go for nothing.

Its from an old company laptop so any cash i get for it will go towards getting more Wii games for the office Wii.

I'm thinking Mario Karts next :-)

Just so i get my details correct when i auction it off. Does the screen have the inverter attached etc or is it just the screen

ps i let the pic large so you can zoom in to examine parts

Cheers

Looks to me like the inverter is on there mate judging by the thick wires going to that PCB.
